M. Night Shyamalan And The Village

Added: 10/20/2007

M. Night Shyamalan is one of those directors that likes to have a surprise ending in his movies. The movies that he does usually leaves you saying, "I never saw that one coming", and for the most part you never will. He does a great job giving let hints to the surprise ending, but most of the time you will not notice it until the second or third time you watch it. His movie The Village is no different and is a well done movie. So, if you have not seen The Village yet, I suggest you go rent it tonight.

The movie The Village by M. Night Shyamalan was going to be called The Woods to start with. However, there was already a film by that name that was created by Lucky McKee. So M. Night Shyamalan went with The Village, which turned out to be a very fitting name of this film anyway. Although The Village was not as successful as some of his other movies, when it came out is was still number one in the box office. This is a movie that appears to take place in an old time village. It is a fairly small village that is surround by words. The elders of the village tell the people that live there that there are creatures that live in the woods, and if you enter there they will kill you. Everything is going good until one of the members of the village gets sick. The town elders tell the people that there is a town on the other side of the woods that has things that can heal him. Of course, because of the monsters that live in the woods, they cannot send just anyone. They have to send someone that the monsters think will not cause them harm. So they choose to send the blind girl that lives in the village. However, as you watch this movie you will see that things are not always as they seem.

We all know that M. Night Shyamalan is famous for putting twist in his movies. We saw this in The Sixth Sent, Sings, and Unbreakable. As you can guess, The Village works much in the same way. However, not all critics had nice things to say about this movie. In fact, many said that Shyamalan's movies feel apart when put to real life logic, and this was even more true for The Village. They say that is why no one saw the twist coming, because it was something that could never happen. With that being said, a lot of his other (well received) movies also could never happen. So why was this one singled out? I think it was because people where trying to make too much out of his movies. The critics did not go into the movie looking to be entertained. They went in trying to figure out the movie before the end, and where upset when they did not know the ending. Despite all the bad reviews and negative things that were said about the movie, it still went on to be a box office hit for a little while. It ended up bring in 114 million dollars, and that was on top of being pulled out of theaters early. It would go on to make a told of 140 million dollars before it was all said and done. However, the movie cost over 71 million dollars to make, and over 40 million dollars advertising. When you compare it to that, the movie did not make that big of a profit.

Overall, The Village is a good movie to see at least once. Although it may not be one that you will want to add to you DVD collection, it is still worth a rent. I think that it is a movie that you will enjoy watching and I can see how it could easily become one of your favorite movies of all time. This is a great movie, that did not live up to all the talk. That does not make it a bad movie. In fact, it is a good movie. You should run out to night and rent the movie if you have not already seen it. You will be happy you did. Do not let other people decide if you like the movie, you should decide for yourself.
