Martin Sheen Is A Family Man And An Actor

Martin Sheen is not only an award winning actor in his own right but he is the father of two other award winning actors as well. Martin Sheen has proven in his life that his family is more important than anything else and the extremes he has gone to in order to protect his family has proven that. It even got to the point where he had his own son arrested because that is how much Martin loves his family.

Ramon Estevez was born on August 3, 1940 in Dayton, Ohio. Later in his life Ramon was following the path his father had forged for him and was signed up to take the entrance exams to the University of Dayton. But Ramon had other ideas and he purposely flunked the entrance exams to college so that he could get into acting as a full time profession. He flunked the exams, went off to Hollywood, and changed his name to Martin Sheen. His father was so upset that he would not even talk to the new Martin Sheen and he lost track of what his son was up to. But as Martin started to gain success his father knew that he would have to accept his son’s decision and allow his son to be Martin Sheen the actor. Martin Sheen’s father never even saw his son act until his father saw Martin Sheen in a movie playing at the local Dayton, Ohio drive-in movie theater. From there on Martin Sheen had the approval of his head strong but proud father.

Martin Sheen got his strong love for his family from his father and he would carry what his father taught him on into his own trek into fatherhood. In 1961 Martin Sheen married Janet Templeton and she took the last name Sheen and the two went on to have four children together. All four of the Sheen children went into some sort of acting projects but only one of them took the last name of Sheen. Martin’s oldest son Charlie took the last name Sheen and went on to a successful acting career embracing his place as the son of Martin Sheen. Martin Sheen and Charlie Sheen even went on to appear in movies together and Martin Sheen even played Charlie Sheen’s father in one of those movies. Martin Sheen’s other son Emilio wanted to take the family name as his last name so he was never accused of riding on his father’s name so he took the name of Emilio Estevez for his acting career and he went on to a successful career as well although his appearances with his father on screen were very limited.

Martin Sheen loves his family and his eldest son Charlie put Martin Sheen into a corner when it was revealed that Martin Sheen had a problem with drug and alcohol abuse. On several occasions the elder Sheen had asked his son to seek help and each time he was assured that Charlie would get the help he needed to get healthy. But Charlie kept on pursuing the dangerous life style of a drug and alcohol abuser and soon Martin Sheen arranged an intervention for his son to get his son to stop heading down a path that would surely kill him sooner than later. Martin agreed to check in to rehab but within two days he had checked back out and was doing drugs again. Martin Sheen was left with no choice but to have his son arrested and forced to undergo rehab under the supervision of the courts. Martin Sheen did not shy away from the media during this trying time. He used the media exposure to explain why he had his son arrested and what he hoped to accomplish. Charlie forgave, and eventually publicly thanked, his father and got healthy and has reportedly been off drugs ever since. To Martin Sheen the balancing act of being a successful actor and a loving parent is not a difficult task at all.
