Added: 10/20/2007

Russia has an ancient history of wedding traditions. The traditional marriage russian ceremony does not have many traditions and many couples do opt for a simple civil service that is not widely attended by their friends and relatives. It should be remembered, that the position of the wedding reception is very high and significant in the Russian tradition. What is the most distinguished aspect of the traditional Russian wedding? It, in the most modest sense lasts for at least two days.

It is true that the Russian law does not recognize church weddings. The reason being such couples wishing to have marriage russian style must have a civil wedding ceremony. At the conclusion of this ceremony the couple is given bread and salt that is the representation of health and prosperity. This civil ceremony is considered unimportant by family members and many of them do not attend. In the Russian culture the wedding reception is a two-day extravaganza that is considered to be more important than the ceremony itself. Thus in every aspect the marriage russian appears to be an unique experience. Now what type of bride you are looking for! Again, what is your intention in having marriage russian women? It is quite possible to find your bride with the help of marriage agency. These matchmakers will help you learn some basic things for the Russian culture, but you might be curious as to what is the traditional Russian marriage ceremony. In the ancient days, especially during the Czarist rule, it was indeed a custom and part of the ritual for the bride and bridegroom to get acquainted, only at their wedding ceremony. At many times it is found, as a custom of marriage russian fashion, they remain promised" to each other since early age. In real sense it is the family and the parents who are making the decision, without the approval of the young man or woman! Only in the late 60's when the hole of the United States of America was whooping with hippy lifestyle, the Russian tradition also started changing bit by bit and more and more young people were allowed to date. However, fornication or any sexual contact before the marriage was strictly forbidden and if found, were dealt severely. Normally, it was thoroughly accepted for the man to visit the woman's family and ask her parents for permission to marry her. The tradition of marriage russian was such, if the father was positive about this, the woman was obliged to knead bread and to take it to her father and mother in law thus showing her modesty and ability to settle her own family.
On the other hand, the concept of buying the bride was certainly not offensive. Though this is still practiced in several parts of Russia, this is taken more as a tradition rather than a real trade act. Men were very much allowed to bid for the woman offering money or luxury presents to her family and trying by all means to prove his wealth. Now, what is the basic reason behind this practice? The main reason behind this practice happens to be to prove that man is able to look after the woman and assure her a good life after the marriage in place of greed. Again, if the bride's family was against any marriage it was not unfeasible for her to get married. The old tradition was offering a solution called Stealing. In the present context it is indeed funny, but a century ago stealing girls was even a noble profession, and used to be performed by the nobles! Even secret meetings of young men were used to be held to chalk out plans in order to trick the family members who were refusing to allow the marriage! In this regard, the orthodox ceremonies usually happen between half an hour to more than four hours which includes all obligatory chants and acts for God's blessing. But, nowadays most modern couples go for the short adaptation. Just after the completion of the customs the marriage moves to a restaurant or other place where all guests have fun and celebrate the event with tons of vodka and delicious Russian meals.
