The film, The Lord of the Rings – The Motion Picture Trilogy is set in the fictional world of the Middle-earth and follow the young Hobbit Frodo Baggins, as he and a Fellowship get attached with a quest to destroy the One Ring, and thus happen to ensure the final destruction of the Dark Lord Sauron. But in course of action that great bond of frienship or Felloship breaks and Frodo is found to continue the quest withhisloyal companion Sam and the treacherous Gollum. Meanwhile, as the film The Lord of the Rings continues the wizard Gandalf and Aragorn, heir in exile to the throne of Gondor get united and keep no stone unturned in rallying the Free Peoples of the Middle-earth in an assortment of battles, both of high andlow intensities culminating in the War of the Ring. As the order of the creation of the Almighty rests on the basic principle of virtue leads to happiness and vices to pain, here also the same notion gets repeated. The wizard Saruman gets defeated, the Ring isdestroyed, along with the complete desturction of Sauron in consjunction with his forces. The films, regarding the three parts of The Lord of the Rings – The Motion Picture Trilogy were written, produced and directed by the commendable film director peter Jackson, and was co-written by Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens and was distributed by the New Line Cinema. It should be kept in concern that till now The Lord of the Rings has been regarded as one of the biggest movie projects ever undertaken, and with an overall budget of $280 million. As the end product of such a gigantic project a total time period of eight years were taken with the filming of all the three films done simultaneously. The entire project was completed in the native land of Peter Jackson, in New Zealand. Indeed the entire trilogy of The Lord of the Rings was a large financial success, with the films attaining the 14th, 7th and 2nd most successful of all time, respectively, unadjusted for inflation. Throughout the international arena the films were critically acclaimed, and bagged 17 Academy Awards in total, which remains beyond the imagination of any other trilogy! Apart from this, the general audience along with the critics had a lot of extolment both for the cast and for the effective implementation of the new-fangled practical and digital special effets. Each film in the trilogy also had Special Extended Editions or SEE, released a year after the theatrical release on DVD. In this respec, it is certainly to be mentioned, that each film is not exactly based on each volume of the book, but rather they represent a three part adaptation, as Jackson takes a more chronological approach to the story, whilst Tolkien retold chunks of his fictional history.

The principal photography of all the three films of The Lord of the Rings – The Motion Picture Trilogy was conducted concurrently in New Zealand from October, 1999 to December 22, 2000 for 274 days at a stretch. While the pick-up shots were conducted on every year from 2001 to 2004, the trilogy was shot in seven different units shooting, as well as soundstages around Wellington and Queenstown.
