The principal photography of all the three films of The Lord of the Rings – The Motion Picture Trilogy was conducted concurrently in New Zealand from October, 1999 to December 22, 2000 for 274 days at a stretch. While the pick-up shots were conducted on every year from 2001 to 2004, the trilogy was shot in seven different units shooting, as well as soundstages around Wellington and Queenstown.

It includes The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring released in 2001, The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers in 2002 and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King in 2003. It is to be noted, that the trilogy is based on the legendary book The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkein. The entire trilogy moves in accordance with the original storyline, though certain deviations are also present.
