Lifestyle Choices for Preventing Breast Cancer

There is nothing you can do that will ensure that you never get breast cancer. Despite the best of efforts, the fact is that you can still get breast cancer. There are, however, certain lifestyle choices that you can make that will increase your chances of preventing breast cancer. They may not be a sure thing but they can make a significant difference.
Breast cancer is a disease that affects far too many women in the United States. It is estimated that 1 in 8 women in the United States of America will get breast cancer at some time during their life. This is a horrible statistic but unfortunately it is a very true one. Despite the best that we have been able to achieve through research and development of new medicines and treatments, we still have been unable to completely eradicate breast cancer or even reduce its risks.

That does not mean that preventing breast cancer is a completely impossible task. There are ways of preventing breast cancer, at least in part. While there is nothing we can do that will completely eliminate the threat of breast cancer, making certain lifestyle choices can help women not only in preventing breast cancer but also many other diseases.

One very important lifestyle choice that can aid in preventing breast cancer is maintaining a healthy weight. Scientific studies have shown that there is a clear link between obesity and breast cancer. The healthier weight you are at, the better able you will be able to fight getting breast cancer. A healthy weight is vital for a healthy lifestyle in general, especially when it comes to preventing breast cancer.

Some recommend that not only should women maintain a healthy weight, but they should also attempt to reduce the amount of fat in their diet. A study by the Women's Health Initiative shows that there is a slight decrease in the chances of getting breast cancer by limiting the amount of fat in your diet. While this is not a large decrease, any decrease can be significant.

It is important to note that changes in your diet for preventing breast cancer is not the same as the Breast Cancer Prevention Diet, which is a specific diet designed by Dr. Bob Arnot. The Breast Cancer Prevention Diet is a diet developed by Dr. Arnot which seeks to decrease risks of getting breast cancer from a holistic look at what we put into our bodies, including eating foods that increase cancer fighting agents within the body. It goes much further than just looking at limiting fat and maintaining a healthy weight.

Physical activity is another important lifestyle choice to look at in the fight to prevent breast cancer. Physically active adults are less at risk from getting breast cancer as well as many other diseases. Getting in 30 minutes of exercise a day can go a long way in helping us to not only maintain a healthy weight but help make ourselves healthier as a whole and better able to fight against diseases such as breast cancer.

You should also limit alcohol consumption. While in moderation things like red wine can be healthy for us, taken in excess, alcohol can be very damaging. Drinking a lot of alcohol on a regular basis can increase your chances of getting breast cancer, as well as suffer from many other health problems.

There is no way of completely preventing breast cancer. However by making certain lifestyle choices it is possible for us to start in the fight of preventing breast cancer and to limit the chances that we will get breast cancer. Maintaining a healthy weight and keeping a physically active lifestyle not only helps us prevent breast cancer but it also keeps us healthier in general, which is always a good thing.
