Latex Halloween Masks Can Be Fun To Make

Added: 11/16/2006

In addition to using latex Halloween masks for Halloween festivities, these masks were also used in the making of films and in the theatre. One interesting way to make a latex Halloween mask is to use a live subject. If you have your heart set on wearing the ever-popular skeleton mask, you can order one from the internet or buy one from the store. Whichever choice you make, just have fun.

Latex Halloween masks are a very popular item to wear to parties and for trick or treating at Halloween. In addition to using latex Halloween masks for Halloween festivities, these masks were also used in the making of films and in the theatre. Making these masks was and is no easy task.

One interesting way to make a latex Halloween mask is to use a live subject. The subject lies in a recliner chair with his hair tucked inside a skullcap. As the plaster is being poured over the head, the subject is breathing out of straws placed in the nostrils. This is done twice; once for the front and once for the back. One interesting way to make a latex Halloween mask is to use a live subject. The subject lies in a recliner chair with his hair tucked inside a skullcap. As the plaster is being poured over the head, the subject is breathing out of straws placed in the nostrils. This is done twice. Once for the front and once for the back.

Plaster is then poured into the mold that was removed from your subject. Once that is done, the outside layer is split away. This molding is the start of your next step.

On this molding, you can add features by using clay and sculpting your design. After this step, the mold now is re cast into a hollow mold, and latex is poured into it. After the mold sits for a while, the excess latex is poured out. When the latex dries, it is pulled from the inside of the mold and you now have your latex Halloween mask.

If you cannot find a victim (subject) for your live molding, you can start your casting by sculpting some oil-based clay around a base. One suggestion to use for a base is a styrofoam wig holder. One other hint for sculpting with clay is to keep some clay in your hands while you sculpt, because clay is more flexible when it is warm. If you do not have the talent or desire to make your own latex Halloween mask, there are other options.

If you have your heart set on wearing the ever-popular skeleton mask, you can order one from the internet or buy one from the store.

Ordering online will give you many options, but you may be disappointed in the fit of the mask, or the costume, if you ordered one of them as well. Department stores have a wide variety of masks and costumes from which to choose. If you have the time, find some different department stores in your area and try some one. It can quite fun to see what you will look like in different costumes. You will also get an idea of what kind of mask will fit your personality. If your choice is to wear a skeleton mask, you may want to consider wearing a costume to complete the skeletal look. Once Halloween is over, you can save it for next year, or, if you do not want any leftover latex Halloween masks or costumes lying around to collect dust, you still have another option.

If you plan ahead of time, you can find a rental store and rent one for the evening. It may cost you the price of buying one, but at least you will not have to worry about what to do with it once the party or the evening of trick or treating is over.

If you are a talented and patient person, making your own latex Halloween masks can be fun. If not, then you still have the option of buying or renting. Whichever choice you make, just have fun.
