Laredo, Texas has long been considered the gateway to Mexico. Laredo sits on the Rio Grande River and the United States/Mexico border. Nuevo Laredo, Mexico is just across the river and is considered Laredo’s sister city. Laredo is just 150 miles away from San Antonio and 150 miles away from Monterrey, Mexico. Nuevo Laredo is within walking distance from Laredo.
Laredo is a great place to stay if you are looking to visit Mexico without having to stay in Mexico. Nuevo Laredo is Laredo, Texas' sister city and is right over the Rio Grande. Other museums of interest include the Rio Grand River Museum and the Washington's Birthday Celebration Museum.
There are a variety of monthly events that take place in Laredo, Texas as well. These include the Tejano Music Awards Kick-Off Dance and Concert at the Laredo Entertainment Center in January. The Laredo Bucks Hockey Games kick-off in January and run through March. As the two cultures of Texan and Mexican combine there are often Spanish and Mexican events that take place in Laredo. Soccer is also very popular and many children's and teenage soccer games are held throughout the soccer season. Laredo, Texas is also a very artistic city and the Texas A&M International University holds many events including music and dancing events and concerts.
The Washington's Birthday Celebration Association hosts several events through the year. The Washington's Birthday Celebration is the largest celebration of it's kind. The celebration starts January 27th and runs through February 19th. The celebration includes Poster contests, Youth Dance Festivals, Twilight Pops, Taste of Laredo, Red, White and Blue Day, Comedy Jam for George and much more. The celebration attracts over 400,000 tourists annually to Laredo, Texas.
