Labor Day, A Holiday To Enjoy

Labor Day is a very special holiday in the United States that sets the day apart from all others and celebrated the working American. The people who work so hard all year round contribute the country and are a large reason that America is what it is today. Held on the first Monday of each September, it is a day of celebration, when families and friends can gather to enjoy each other company and have a great time.
Most Americans work very hard all year round. As they have house payments, rent, car expenses, food to buy, clothing needs and sadly, credit card debt; Labor Day is the one day a year when hardworking Americans can take a break from work and enjoy a day of fun, food, family and friends. With Labor Day falling on the first Monday of every September, it offers most workers a day off from their work schedule and the weather is usually just perfect for celebrating.

One of the main features of this holiday is the traditional barbeque. Although some people will choose a different menu, it is a wide stretching tradition to have a barbeque. What is involved in the fine art of barbecuing? Almost any food and be cooked via this method and by cooking food over a barbecue, it offers a distinct flavor that seems to make the day special. Favorites will always include hamburgers, hotdogs, and corn-on-the-cob. In addition, such more luxuries foods may be cooked, such as steaks, chicken and sausages.

Side dishes are just as important. Potato salad is an American staple that is to be expected on such a holiday date. It can be made as simply as cooking potatoes and allowing them to cool. They are then cut into bite size pieces. In a bowl, they are then can be mixed with mayonnaise and the dish can remain as simple as that. In addition, some items can be added to make the dish more special. Some choose to add cold hard-boiled eggs, spices and/or small cut pieces of onion. Each family seems to have their own special recipe. Aside from the potato salad, traditional lettuce salads can be served, chips, fruit such as watermelon and other favorites.

The Labor Day date is ideally spent outside. In many parts of the United States, September brings not only this holiday, but it marks the end of the summer weather and the beginning of cooler weather. Outside of the most southern states, September is the last month of the year in which most people can enjoy the day outside without being very cold. If one is lucky, the day will be very sunny and warm; making the day perfect for the barbecue.

Even if the day is rainy, people can still enjoy spending the day with their families. With nice weather, the day can be spent outside, in backyards or in parks in which people have picnics. When having to be held indoors, some people still choose to barbecue, and then bring the food in. Quite often sporting events are held on television, and families will gather around to watch them. In addition, with the growing popularity of DVD movies, some families will chose this day to relax in the living room and enjoy watching a movie together. DVD’s are very popular now, as the time from when a movie is released into the theatres and then released onto DVD becoming close together. Some movies are out on video within months of the release date. This makes watching movies trendier than ever.

No matter how a family wishes to spend Labor Day, the most important thing is that they are spending it together. Time with friends and family is important. As Labor Day celebrates the working American, all Americans know that the main reason they work so hard is to create a happy and comfortable living for their family. Without family, a person would have little motivation to be such a hard worker.
