Keeping Travelers Safe with the Texas Safety Rest Program

Added: 07/13/2006

The Texas safety rest program is a plan that has been put into action to provide safe, beautiful, and innovative places for travelers to stop along the way. So many wrecks involve weary travelers, and with great places to stop and rest, Texas safety rest area supporters hope that people will stop before they get tired. Rest is essential on long trips, but so often there is not a good place to stop and rest, and fatal and devastating crashes are the result.

The Texas safety rest area program is a program that has been established by the state to make travels for people passing through the state more comfortable.  Everyone knows that when they are traveling long distances you can find that you are very tired when you are behind the wheel.  Texas safety rest area program is working to accommodate weary travelers so that they have a nice place to stop and rest, if need be.  Not only can they stop and rest in their vehicle, but they can enjoy established rest areas that are beautiful to look at, incorporate plants and foliage that are natural to each specific area of Texas.  This is a huge undertaking, as you might imagine, because Texas is such a large state and has such an expanse highway system.

The Texas safety rest program is great for showing off historic or scenic sites in the state.  When possible, the Texas safety rest program tries to incorporate the rest areas with areas of interest such as historic sites, scenic overlooks, and natural wonders.  Not only does this make a great place to stop and rest, but it may bring some peace and some relaxation to the weary traveler.  Kids love this sort of thing because it allows them to get out of the car on long trips and see something that interests them.  Running around a historic site for just 15 minutes will refresh and revitalize the senses of the whole family so that they can continue their trip happily.

The Texas safety rest program aims to keep travelers safe on their journeys across the state.  Of course, the rest areas won't force people to stop when they are tired, but it will encourage them to stop and take a load off.  With more than 71,000 crashes that involve fatigue on the state highways every year, it's obvious that the state needs to do everything in their power to keep travelers safe and give them an opportunity to rest.  With 1.5% of all of the crashes in the state every year involving fatigue, Texas is putting its foot down and is incorporating location, beauty, interesting sites, and innovative designs to give people a place to rest.

The Texas safety rest program is the first of its kind, and will take a long time to have all of the proposed Texas safety rest area or scenic rest stop sites completed.  This will be an ongoing project, and more rest stops will likely be added to the plan as it unfolds.  The idea is to place the rest areas where people will take the time to stop.  The median of Texas highways are not the place to stop when you are tired, so these Texas safety rest program stops are going to provide the respite that many drivers are looking for during their travels.

The great thing is that these rest areas will be kept up long term; they will not be forgotten like many rest stops in other states.  These Texas rest areas will be looked after and designed so that they will continue to provide a safe, attractive, and even interesting place to stop during the weary travelers' journey.  Even if a traveler is not tired, he or she may find that these are great places to stop and learn a bit of Texas history, or simply appreciate the beauty of the diverse Texas landscape.
