Humans and animals have lived together in society for centuries. Some animals have become extinct through the centuries. However, there have always been animals in society. In fact, humans have used animals for their needs since the dawn of time. Humans needs include food, shelter, clothing, and comfort. In addition, animals are used in sports.
Many people love to try animal sports. In fact many people love to go to the horse races. They also like to go hunting. There are even greyhound races that take place yearly on racing tracks. In fact, racing is the most popular form of animal related sport, particularity horse racing. Some racing events directly involve humans as riders while other racing events have the animal race alone. In some sports, the rider isn’t directly riding the animal or animals. Some animal sports have the rider being pulled along by the animal or animals. These types of racing sports can include dogsled racing and the popular Greek and Roman sport of chariot racing. Did you know that greyhound racing is one of the most popular forms of animal racing? It dates back to the 1800s in the United States. Greyhounds were brought over from Europe in order to control the hare population. While track racing is the most common, there are other forms of racing such as pigeon racing. Racing events are a common manner of gambling because billions of dollars are spent worldwide every year. This is one reason why some countries and states have made such sports illegal. Therefore, some countries and states don’t wish people to try animal sports.
Did you know that there are some non-racing competitive events involving animals? Polo is one of the most popular examples, with competitors hitting a ball with mallets while on horseback. Elephant polo dates back to the early 20th century when members of the British aristocracy in Nepal began playing the sport. In the 14th through 16th centuries, jousting was a popular one on one tournament event involving knights on horseback.
Films and television series about animals in sport can be realistic or fictional involving animals in an activity that they can’ really perform. Seabiscuit is a fairly accurate portrayal of the famous American horse of the same name, while MVP, Most Valuable Primate, a film about a hockey playing chimpanzee, is somewhat less realistic. Also, there is a fox hunting scene in Mary Poppins. Therefore, there are many ways to try animal sports either by seeing them in person or watching them on film and on television.
