It's Almost Time for Olympics

There are four seasons in the year and in each season of the year; there are many different holidays and events that people look forward to celebrating with their friends and family. In the wintertime, we look forward to celebrating Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Hanukkah by eating various foods such as turkey, cranberries, pumpkin and apple pie. These holidays are cause for celebration, but in the summer there are events to enjoy too.
There are many events in the year that people like to celebrate such as Easter, Passover, Halloween, Fourth of July, Saint Patrick’s Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Hanukkah. In addition to all of these holidays, there are many other events that people like to celebrate and take part in; for instance many people love to celebrate their birthday with cake, ice cream, and a nice dinner. In addition to birthdays and the above holidays, many sports lovers enjoy celebrating huge sporting events such as the World Series, the Superbowl, the NBA playoffs, and the Olympics. The Olympics were originally held every four years, whether they were the Winter Olympics or the summer Olympics. Today, the winter Olympics and the summer Olympics are alternated so that the Olympics take place every two years. In 2008, the summer Olympics will take place in Beijing China. In fact, the summer Olympics will begin on August 8th, 2008. The most recent summer Olympics took place in Athens Greece and the most recent winter Olympics took place in Turin Italy. There is such fanfare and so many sporting events in both versions of the Olympics that many sports lovers can’t wait for Olympics to begin.

The Olympics Games are often just called the Olympics or the Games. The Olympics is an international sporting event with many events within it. It is divided into summer sporting events such as swimming, diving, weight lifting, track and field, and gymnastics, and winter sporting events such as skiing, speed skating, ice skating, and curling. The original Olympic Games took place in 776 BC in Olympia Greece. They were celebrated until 393 AD. Interest in reviving the Olympic Games was first shown by the Greek poet and newspaper editor Panagiotis Soutsos. In addition, there are various myths and legends surrounding the beginning of the ancient Olympic Games. The most popular legend describes Hercules as the creator of the ancient Olympic Games. It was also claimed that Hercules constructed the Olympic stadium and all of the surrounding buildings as a tribute to his father, Zeus, who had completed his twelve labors. Another ancient Olympic Games myth is that the bearing of the Olympic torch originated at the ancient Olympic Games. The ancient Games didn’t include either the torch or the symbol formed by the five colorful and interlocking rings. These Olympic symbols were introduced during the modern Olympic Games.
