Is Owen Wilson the Write Actor's Choice?

For a celebrity its helluva job, to stay in the spotlight and always for a good reason. 39-year-old comic actor Owen Wilson had been recuperating and healing in a Cedars Sinai hospital wing a few weeks back. Has tragedy caught up with the comedy for him? Since his debut in 1998 with "Bottle Rocket" he has shown a flair for comedy. But what is the gnawing problem beneath the laugh lines of this writer-actor?
The actor known for his comic capers on screen is currently starring in recently released ‘The Darjeeling Limited’, a movie based on a spiritual sojourn to India. Owen Wilson remains on the fringes of stardom despite an enviable body of work. Well known for a film ‘Wedding Crashers’ with Vince Vaughn, a tropical hit, in the summer of 2006, he has been consistently giving a good performance. In competitive Hollywood an artiste needs a powerful script to keep him going. Owens’s movie track has pretty good as he moves along with his brothers and close friends in the orbit of Hollywood’s star trek. He is a pure Texan in nature. A subtle streak of a bad boy image comes as a flashback from school days. He got into trouble like any other high school boy would. Wit brother Luke Wilson and friend Wess he decided to walk the shaky starlit path. He has been there, done it and is still continuing his capers on screen. About his flair for writing he once put it straight on record in his debutante film as a writer, “The way some people are good at figuring out equations in algebra, I like to think I'm good at figuring out why characters behave the way they do. I like the ones who are slightly cracked.” The quirky writer enjoyed movies like the ‘Armageddon’ and ‘The Haunting’. Easy to know why he was cast in these flicks. As a child he loved these action flicks. So how did his big crooked nose lead him to the gag bags? He does have a sense of humor and good comic timing too. But he hasn’t been able to turn the tables on Jackie Chan in ‘Shanghai Knights’ or its sequel ‘Shanghai Noon’. The stunt man kicked his way into the hearts of the people. Owen was just there, like a prop for the main lead in the film. Owen once made a sincere statement, “To be honest, I don't even know why they cast me. Maybe they were getting desperate. After a couple of days of filming, I think everyone realized that I was kind of awkward and probably better at delivering dialogue than action.” Wilson said this to Empire in 2000. And elsewhere he said, “"I decided if Jackie was doing all his own stunts, I wanted to be known as the actor who never did any.”

It is hard to sell yourself in Hollywood. Owen Wilson knows that as he has been repeatedly teaming up with smaller projects with his friend indeed Wess Anderson. It is undeniable that Owen Wilson has put his gray cells together for some fantastic work to. It is very much apparent in Bill Murray starrer ‘Rushmore’. Acting with other high profile stars like Eddie Murphy, Ben Stiller, Mat Dillion, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Vince Vaughn he has been noticed for his acting talents. Is Owen Wilson a better scriptwriter or an actor? His track record seems balanced. So far his serious movies like ‘Behind the Enemy Lines’ with Gene Heckman also did good business by Hollywood standards. Like any other actor he has given duds like ‘The Cable Guy’, ‘Anaconda’. But it is to his credit he is in the spotlight for his delightful appearances in ‘Meet the Fockers’, Bruce Willis starrer ‘Armadeggon’, ‘Wedding Crashers’, ‘You, Me DuPree’. He has also appeared in a television series ‘Heat Vision and Jack’ in 1999. Born in Dallas, Texas, he is still seen as a promising new star on the movie horizon. Will he be able to script another on screen success? It is hard to tell which ways destiny will crash-land him.
