Is It Janet Or Susan Sarandon?

Susan Sarandon has lived a fascinating life and her legacy that will remain when she is long gone will consist of Oscar caliber performances, her children, and that one role that really got her career started. This Oscar winning actress has quite a range and she has displayed that range her entire career. Now in her 60’s she has no intentions on slowing down just yet.
Susan Sarandon was born in New York City on October 4, 1946. Her entire life she has always felt obliged to stand up for what she has believed in. Her first film role audition came about because of the activities that happened at the 1968 Democratic National Convention. Sarandon was not at the convention but her and her husband at the time, Chris Sarandon, went to watch Chris audition for a role in the 1970 movie Joe. Chris Sarandon was passed over but his wife was asked to audition for, and got, a major role in the movie. From there Susan Sarandon’s movie career was well on it’s way and no one could have ever guessed where it would take her. The roles that Susan Sarandon is known for are as diverse as he political activist interests outside of Hollywood. She was once arrested for protesting the shooting of a young man by the New York City police. She has always stood up for what she believes in. She even fought to have the Dr. Laura show taken off of the radio because she did not agree with Dr. Laura’s views. But Sarandon also carries an impressive film resume and her introduction into the Hollywood scene started with a freak show.

In 1975 Susan Sarandon appeared in a movie that many people never thought would make it past opening week. She played the role of Janet in the Rocky Horror Picture Show which was a movie based on a very popular British stage production. When the movie first came out it did not do very well at all but it was not long before theater owners figured out that if you play the movie at midnight then you will get an audience. Over 30 years later the Rocky Horror Picture Show is still being played in theaters all over the world at midnight and Susan Sarandon still sometimes gets called Janet by people that see her on the street. It is always nice to get your movie career started by playing a major role in a cult classic. From there Sarandon would play roles from a nun to a baseball wife and earn 5 Oscar nominations while winning one of the little gold statues.

In 1980, a mere 5 years after her role as Janet, Sarandon was nominated for best actress in a leading role for her work in the movie Atlantic City. The movie had a small budget and made a small profit but the critical acclaim put Sarandon on the Hollywood map for good. This was also around the time when she divorced her husband Chris as the two separated for good in 1979. It would be 9 years before Sarandon would settle down with someone else for any extended period of time but she would never re-marry. In 1988 she took up residence with actor Tim Robbins, and even though the two have had two children together, the couple remains blissfully unwed to this day. Sarandon’s career just kept right on going.

In 1991 Sarandon got to open up her acting catalog and put on another career making performance in the financial and critical hit movie Thelma & Louise. Sarandon played Louise and it is a role that has been revisited by sketch comedy shows and other types of parody and tribute ever since. She finally won an Oscar for her role in the 1995 movie Dead Man Walking. Sarandon has a whole slate of movies coming out in the near future and the world awaits.
