Interracial Dating Is Becoming More Accepted

Added: 04/04/2007

Years ago, some people would be up in arms over the topic of interracial dating, a lot has changed. With people finding each other via the Internet and the world seemingly becoming smaller as races mix throughout the United States, interracial dating is now widely accepted. Despite some issues that may arise, if two people care about each other, these issues can be overcome. When it comes to dating color does not mean a thing.

Years ago, the populous of the United States created a stereotype against interracial dating. An interracial couple walking down the street would cause stares and disapproving comments. A lot has changed over time and interracial dating is now more widely accepted. When it comes to dating, relationships and love, people are discovering that color does not mean a thing.

Interracial couples can tell you about their dating experience as some of them may have faced some lingering issues that still exist, despite the stereotype slowly erasing away from the mainstream. Most often, when two people from different races are dating the backlash they receive will come from family members. People of older generations may not fully accept the idea of interracial dating as freely as younger people. Reminded of the days of segregation and controversy, family members can often try to sabotage an interracial couple.

When faced with negative reactions from family, friends or even strangers, interracial couples must endure the stress that goes along with it. Sometimes a person will find that negative reactions will occur from people of their own race, disapproving of dating outside their own ethnic group. It is a barrier that is slowly changing, but certainly not one that should stop two people who wish to date from seeing each other. Some people believe that every race should not be integrated with each other, as each race is different and unique. They may see interracial dating as a threat to their own ethnic group. Hopefully, that issue will slowly erode as people become more and more accepting to the fact that the United States, as well as other countries, is a wonderful mix of many ethnics groups; and to try to keep people separated is not logical or productive.

The important issue to focus on is the feelings and the relationship of the interracial couple. Color aside, the one thing that a single person will someday wish for is a person who understands them, supports them and adds happiness to their life. If a person is lucky enough to find those traits in another person and wishes to have that person in their life, color seems like a very small issue; one not important enough to stop the possibility of love.

An interracial couple should carefully discuss any issues with each other and keep the communication lines open. If one or both of the partners in the relationship know that family members will be disapproving, it is best to plan ahead. A couple who remains strong throughout adversary and negatively will most undoubtedly prove their strength to remain strong throughout all events that couples go through. Being open about fears of disapproval can open the doors to receiving the emotional support a person may need from their partner. One day interracial dating will not even be an issue. Each year the United States becomes more of a wonderful melting pot of ethnic people. Those who look down on interracial couples will eventually see that love holds no rules to color.
