Fifty percent of the world's population is women. It took ages however to observe and appreciate their contribution to the world, appreciate their rights and acknowledge their strengths. For centuries women have struggled to achieve economic, political and social independence. Women from all over the world have actively promoted peace and organized continuous anti-war protests and movements. Women's Day celebrates and commemorates the efforts of these women all over the world, which made the world a better place to live in.
International Women's Day has a long history down the centuries. According to different sources, the womens day celebration was first celebrated in the United States of America on February 28th, 1909, and for the next four years it continued to be celebrated on the last Sunday of the month of February.
In 1910, in an international meeting at Copenhagen Women's Day was officially recognized as a day to internationally celebrate women's struggle for quality all over the world. However, no official date was announced for the womens day, hence it continued to be celebrated on the last Sunday of February.
The very next year, in 1911 women in Europe organized rallies for women's rights where men too participated. The women bodies added to the list of equal voting rights and holding of public offices, the right to equal and employment without discrimination.
International Women's Day came to its highest prominence in 1913 when Russian women got together to protest against war which killed millions of your Russian soldiers. The day the rallies of protest were organized was on womens day, i.e. the last Sunday of February as usual.
The next year, in 1914, women all over the world joined in these protests to support the movement against the war set into motion by the Russian women. They chose to launch the protests simultaneously on Women's Day in order to give full momentum and observance solidarity of the cause. The day in Russia was the same, last Sunday of February, 23 Feb 1914 of the Julian yearly calendar which was followed in Russia. Its equivalent day, according to the Gregorian yearly calendar followed elsewhere in the world fell on March 8, 1914. Since then, Women's day is celebrated on March 8th through out the world.
The importance of Women's Day has been upheld by continuous development in women's struggle all over the world on peace, development, social, political and economical equality and educational rights. The United Nations fully supporting the efforts of the women's movement has given the day a global presence.
Joining in the recognition of women's struggle and in appreciation of their contribution as mothers, daughters, and wives families have used this Women's Day to wish and thank women. Schools have organized special programs, greeting cards have designed for this occasion and families all over the world observed this day as a special day to offer thanks and gratitude for all that women selflessly do in the homes and outside. It is a day when the family can say "THANK YOU".
