Violence in the Olympics is something that is totally against the spirit of Olympics. Unfortunately there have been instances when violence in the Olympics has taken place. The worst of its kind took place in the year 1972 during the Munich Olympic Games when Palestinian terrorists attacked members of the Israeli contingent to the Olympics. The Israeli government then retaliated by taking on the might of these terrorist organizations and eventually many Palestinians too were killed in the process. Although very unfortunate violence in the Olympics is something that has taken place during different points in time, the year in which this attack took place is very significant since it was the first time since 1936 that the games had returned back to Germany. The earlier 1936 games were a show of might for the Hitler who wanted to show off the so called superiority of the Aryan race at the Olympics. This is one of the most famous of the various highlights of the Olympics movement. The common man in Germany was hoping that the Olympics in 1972 would heal some of the wounds that Hitler had caused due to his actions during the 1936 games that were held in Germany. It was under this scenario that the attack in 1972 took place. With just six days left for the games to end in Munich, eight terrorists quietly slipped into the massive Olympic village. They first killed two athletes from the Israeli contingent and also took nine others as hostages. The terrorists then demanded the release of around 200 odd Palestinians who were held in various Israeli prisons along with the release of two German terrorists who were held in West Germany at that time. They also demanded their own safe passage out of the country. The Israeli government remained stubborn and refused to give in to the demands of the terrorists. The then West German government also requested Egypt to mediate. Egypt too refused to mediate even after this request. After a whole day of failed negotiations the terrorists took the hostages to a military airport in Munich for boarding a flight back to the Middle East. This is when West German sharp shooters opened fire on them with the terrorists firing back. All the nine hostages were killed along with five of the terrorists and one officer of the West German police. Three of the terrorists were captured. A Lufthansa jet owned by the then West German government was hijacked on October 29th the same year by some Arab terrorists. These terrorists demanded the release of the Palestinian terrorists who had been arrested by the West German authorities earlier after the shoot out at the airport. The then West German government gave in this time and released all the terrorists. The Israeli government launched a swift counter attack on the terrorist organizations and camps and declared that such terrorism will not be tolerated. They attacked various guerrilla targets in Lebanon killing and wounding hundreds of people. One can find detailed instances of such violence in the Olympics by going through online sources.
