Ideas for Halloween Party Games

Added: 11/16/2006

October 31st is the day that millions of men, women, and children celebrate the sixth most profitable holiday for retailers in the United States. Although children and adults celebrate Halloween, a major part of the celebration involves children dressing up in costumes and going from home-to-home collecting candy. Another great way to make the holiday fun for children is to host parties in which they get to dress up in their favorite costumes, eat lots of goodies, and play Halloween party games.

Each year on October 31st millions of men, women, and children celebrate Halloween. The holiday has become quite popular and is the sixth most profitable holiday for retailers in the United States. Halloween began as a Pagan festival celebrated amongst the Celts in Ireland and Great Britain. In the 1800s the Irish, Scots, Welsh, and other immigrants brought their Halloween traditions to North America. Their Halloween celebrations included Scottish-American and Irish-American societies holding dinners and balls to celebrate their heritages, and home celebrations in which children bobbed for apples and played divination games.

The commercialization of Halloween during the 20th century has contributed to the change in how the holiday is celebrated. For instance, before 1900 there is very little evidence that masks and costumes were wore in the United States or elsewhere, and mass-produced costumes were not found in stores until the 1930s. Also, trick-or-treating did not become popular until the 1950s.

Although both children and adults participate in Halloween activities, a major part of the holiday involves children dressing up in costumes and trick-or-treating (going to homes and even businesses to collect candy). Some parents choose to hold parties for their children and their friends instead of taking them trick-or-treating.

No party would be complete without candy, of course, great Halloween party decorations, and fun Halloween party games to keep children laughing and having lots of fun. The web site partygameideas.com has plenty of ideas for great Halloween party games including the following.

Mummy Wrap
Children are divided into pairs, and each pair receives a roll of toilet paper. One child uses the toilet paper to wrap-up the other one like a mummy. The first team to empty the roll wins the game.

Pin the Wart on the Witch
Either buy a face of a witch or draw a witch’s face on a piece of poster board and attach it to the wall. Each child is given a small piece of gum (the wart) to chew. Once the gum is pliable the child is blindfolded, spun around, and pointed in the right direction. They must then pin the wart on the witch’s nose. The child who comes the closest to pinning the wart on the witch’s nose wins.

Halloween Corners Game
This game is good for children 3 - 8 years old. Place large Halloween theme – witch, bat, ghost, pumpkin, or black cat – pictures in each of the four corners of a room. All of the children stand in the center of the room while music is played. When the music stops, each child runs to a corner in the room. Without looking, the person who is playing the music names the image on one of the posters. The children who are standing in that corner are out of the game. This continues until there is only one child left who is then declared the winner.

Halloween is a great holiday for children to dress up in costumes, get lots of candy, and have lots of fun. Hosting a party for children is also a great way for them to enjoy the holiday. But, no Halloween party is complete without Halloween party games that children can play to have fun and win prizes.

There are many Halloween party games that children can play including Mummy Wrap, Pumpkin Bowling, Pin the Wart on the Witch, Witch Hunt, and Create a Haunted Story.
