In the world of Norman Rockwell, the famous painter of so many images of little boys and their exploits from the turn of the 20th century and of animal friendship, a little boy’s best friend is his dog and a little girl’s best friend is her cat. This is one of the ways in which art imitates life as for many little boys and girls their animal friendships are the most important friendships they have. Usually people that grow up as a part of animal friendships from the time they are small will maintain those animal friendships their entire lives. If someone grew up with cats then it becomes normal to have cats around to not only have as pets but also as animal friendships to talk to and confide in. What more perfect friend could their be that your pet? When they can sit still they will listen to you as long as you pet them, they never tell you that you are wrong, they never argue with you, and even your deepest darkest secret is safe with your pet. It is perfect and millions of people turn to be part of animal friendships as their outlet for their anguish because pets can be so easy to talk to. No one really knows what the pets think about all of this but the theory is that they don’t mind as long as a treat or being petted is involved.

Life has a way of throwing curve balls at you and some people do not deal with life’s little pitfalls so well. Some people wear out their human sounding boards as they never are able to keep themselves out of trouble and they always need someone to talk to. In reality all many people need is someone to listen to their problems as they get them off their chest. Pets are perfect for this as pets can sit and listen to their owners ramble for hours and occasionally a pet will make a sound or motion that can be a comforting indication to their owner that they are listening and that the beauty of animal friendships. If a distraught teen age girl is telling Fluffy the cat all about her problems and occasionally Fluffy will meow or roll over on her back as the teen age girl is talking then this is perceived as a sign of understanding on the part of the cat and can make the teen age girl feel much better and the girl is a fan of animal friendships. Everyone knows that, in reality, the cat has no idea what the teen age girl is saying but the movement by the cat that is perceived as a response is still comforting to the teen age girl. These are the types of things that pets can do to help calm their owners and that may be why it is said that owning a pet can extend your life by years.

Many people lose track of having pets when they move out of their home and they either leave their childhood pet behind with mom and dad or the cherished childhood pet passes away before the person leaves home. The young man, for instance, will venture out into the world and go to college and live his life. Sometimes the young man will instantly find that they are so used to having a pet around that they must have one in their first home of their own. Some times the young man goes through personal crisis, a lost job or failed relationship, and brings a pet into his home to have something to vent his frustrations at but more importantly to have a companion that will love unconditionally.

Pet owners are usually pet owners for life. People that say that, as they reach advanced years, they are done owning animals because perhaps they feel they are too old to care for an animal anymore or that they are still distraught about the passing of their last pet will usually find themselves with a new pet. The lure of owning pets is strong and it is no wonder. For all of the potential damage they can do with their claws and the bodily fluids, a pet is still a faithful companion. For some people that are unable to have children a pet becomes the only outlet for that love the couple would normally want to give to a child. This situation is not unusual at all and it shows the broad range of tasks and needs that a pet fulfills and they fulfill those roles very well. Not bad for what some people refer to as dumb animals.
