Before her wedding day, the Chinese bride traditionally goes into seclusion with her closest friends. This will give her time to mourn the loss of her family and friends. The Grooms family carries wedding gifts in Red baskets and boxes to the Brides home, sometime before the couples are married. One of these baskets will contain “Uang Susi”, or “Milk Money”. Others will contain personal things for the Bride, so that she will have all of her belongings in the home of the groom on her wedding day. The Bride takes the gifts to another room where they are sorted through. Three days before the Brides families reciprocate; bearing gifts “inducing some returns” in red wrapping to the Grooms family.

The day of the wedding should be carefully chosen. Chinese wedding traditions say they should be chosen by astrological signs. It is also customary for the Bride and Groom to be married on the half-hour instead of the top of the hour. This way, the couple can begin their new lives together on an ‘upswing’ while the hands of the clock are moving up rather than down.

On the morning of the wedding day, traditional Chinese weddings, the groom’s parents usually dress him. This follows Chinese wedding traditions. He will arrive at the house of his Bride on the way to the wedding chapel. He will bring gifts of cash wrapped in red paper to give to his Brides friends, in exchange for “letting her go”. The Bride and Groom then leave to go to the wedding site together.

Only the immediate families usually attend the wedding ceremony. Before and just after the wedding ceremony the Bride will serve tea to her in-laws. This honors Chinese wedding traditions in a formal ceremony. The couple will then go to their reception, which is an elaborate standing only event.

An MC who is hired for this special occasion usually makes a welcoming speech. A cake ceremony is then followed, holding with Chinese wedding traditions. The traditional wedding cake is immense with many, many layers. The layers symbolize a ladder that the couple will ‘climb to success’. The couple will cut the cake starting from the bottom as in Chinese wedding traditions, and then they work their way up the cake. The Bride and Groom feed each other a piece of cake
With their arms entwined, and trying to keep the Brides makeup still looking gorgeous. A piece is then cut for each of the parents and grandparents and the Bride and Groom feed the cake to them.

Sometimes a traditional Chinese wedding toast is made and guests are invited to meet the new couple and their families. It is customary Chinese wedding traditions to shake hands again before you leave the reception.
