Vacations are a fun filled time for us to enjoy our families away from the pressures of the work or school worlds for a change. Our pets play an important part of these families and being able to take them with us only seems natural. Follow the safety rules for traveling with you furry friend and you and your pets vacation will be relaxing, safe and a happy journey.
If your dog is medium to the large breed type, call your hotel you will be staying at to be sure that they have no restrictions upon a pet’s size in their regulations. Many hotels only allow smaller pets less than 25 pounds. This will help you avoid any unpleasantness on you and your pet’s vacation arrival.
Don’t ever leave your pet inside your hotel room unaccompanied, sometimes they will bark or panic if they are in a strange place without anyone around them and some hotels will not allow them to be unsupervised at all. Remember this is your pet’s vacation too and they don’t want to stay cooped up inside the hotel room anyway.
Provide water and food for your pet with dishes you have brought with you and only place them on hard ceramic tile surfaces or in the bathroom of your room for the easiest cleaning.
When you walk your pet outside on the hotel’s properties, bring a pooper scooper or plastic baggies to pick up after them once they have completed their business. This is etiquette for the other dog owners traveling with their pets as well as hotel policy.
Recommendations for your pets vacation travel in a car with you include either putting them in a comfortable cat traveling carrier or using a gate for the back area of your car for medium to larger breeds of dogs. This will keep them from interfering with your driving and be safe for them and you.
Be sure to walk your pet and exercise well before getting in the car to start on you and your pets vacation. This will help them be calmer and sleep a bit while you start on your journey and prevent you from having to stop about 30 minutes down the road because they have to go again. Usually every 2 hours is a very good break time and potty time for them with a nice relaxing quick walk. Crates should always be used when cats traveling in the car and they should not be taken out unless all doors and windows are closed and locked. Your pet’s area inside the vehicle should be ventilated well or air-conditioned for the best.
If your pet’s vacation includes air travel, whether it is a dog or a cat, these guidelines and rules must be followed. The pet must be completely weaned and at the least age eight weeks or more, they cannot have any type of disease or sickness and cannot be under any ailments of distress, Your pet must have had all required documentation and certification needed before being able to board the airplane and the carrier of travel for your pet must meet all standards and requirements the airline has, such as, it has to be big enough your pet can lie down comfortably and still have some room left, they should be able to stand up easily within it and be able to do a turn-around if necessary, it should also have padding or bedding for them to lie upon while on their travels.
Some items to pack on you and your pets vacation include a few chew bones, treats, balls and toys they favor the most along with a blanket, pillow or pet bed for their comfort during travel. For cats they will need to be inside a sturdy and comfortable carrier, with a litter tray and their own litter as well and a few lovely catnip toys of their own. For dogs and cats pet vacations you should bring their own normal food from home and a big jug of drinking water that is fresh from your home as well. Portable drinking and food bowls are your best bet for traveling.
