How To Find Roommate Candidates To Cut Your Rent In Half

Added: 05/15/2007

In today's economy it is often difficult to pay the rent, pay your bills, buy food and essentials and then have any money left over to save or have fun with. One of the best ways to save money is to look to find roommate potentials that can cut your rent in half. If you follow certain guidelines to ensure that a good match is found, you may find that living with a roommate can be a great idea.

Today’s economy can be brutal. Gas prices are raising faster each day, food can be overwhelmingly expensive. The average individual is over ten-thousand dollars in debt with credit cards. Most people have cell phones bills, Internet bills, and car payments. Add to that the cost of renting an apartment, and surely the thought to find roommate candidates has crossed your mind. Some may think it might be difficult to live with another person, but if you screen carefully and rules are set up in advance, this type of living arrangement can be very beneficial.
To begin to find roommate candidates, you should first carefully consider the sex of the person you wish to live with. While men and women can be roommates, this situation can cause many issues that same sex roommates will not encounter. It is sometimes difficult for men and women to find common ground, and when looking to find roommate potentials, careful thought should be given as to whether or not you can live with a member of the opposite sex and keep things running smoothly. A person should never look for a roommate of the opposite sex if they are hoping to find love this way. Men and women roommates need to be platonic friends; to ever make a pass at a roommate is a sure way to find disaster. If you are seeking a roommate of the opposite sex, do it for the right reasons. Find roommates of the opposite sex if you think sharing household duties will be easier, if you know you can respect them and if you do not have sex on your mind.
When looking to find roommate candidates, you should make sure to make a posting that clearly describes what you are looking for. If you are looking for a quiet person, say so. If you are looking for a male roommate who can contribute to yard maintenance, say so. Have the potential candidates know exactly what you are seeking; in this way you can save time for all involved.
When you are screening candidates to find roommate potentials that fit your lifestyle, you should have a written list. Ask questions that are important to you. Perhaps you do not wish to live with a smoker; perhaps you are looking for someone who will not have company over every night. Try to judge the type of lifestyle a person lives, and see if it would be compatible to yours. Try to only find roommate candidates that can offer some type of reference. Some people may be in great need of assistance, they may be struggling with money; so as long as they can pay you one month in advance, you should not hold it against them if they are without large sums of money. After all, you are in need of money too, it is alright if they are: that is the point of finding a roommate, to make living expenses easier to deal with. However, it will help if a person has some references, particularly a work reference. You will be able to find roommate candidates in which you will simply have a good feeling or a bad feeling and you should go with your gut instinct.
Make a set of rules that must be followed. Do not make the rules just for your roommate. It is only fair that you both follow rules. For instance, you can divide household chores and each week, you both can switch off on which ones you will do. If you are making a rule that your roommate can not receive telephone calls after midnight, you should follow this rule as well. If you ask that your roommate does not eat your food, never eat your roommate’s food. If you both show respect for the rules, you can live happily. Sometimes, rules must be adjusted; if you find roommate issues are arising; talk about them. Communication is vital, rules can be changed, and most disagreements can be worked out if both people are mature. Having a quality roommate can make life much easier.
