How The Vegan Cookie Crumbles

Added: 12/30/2005

Many people consider that the vegan lifestyle is a lifestyle of culinary deprivation. However, now that there are more vegan substitutes for non-vegan foods on the market than ever before, the vegan lifestyle is changing quickly. When it comes to a vegan cookie, vegan cheese, or any other vegan substitute for a dairy food, there is still a lot of debate about whether the imitation is successful enough to be truly enjoyable to eat.

There are many arguments to be made against a vegan lifestyle, and the average vegan cookie is a strong supporter for many of those arguments.  Many people feel that a vegan lifestyle is a lifestyle of deprivation.  For instance, if you compare a vegan cookie to a regular cookie, it becomes clear that a vegan cookie is less pleasurable to eat, more difficult to prepare, and is also usually harder to find for sale in a convenient location than a cookie made in the conventional way with butter and eggs.  However, when one weighs the benefits of the vegan lifestyle against the inconveniences and flaws of going vegan, the inconveniences surrounding finding a vegan cookie may not be a strong enough argument to convince a vegan to renounce his or her dietary lifestyle.

Few people, whether they are vegan or not, would argue that a vegan cookie is more delicious than a classic chocolate chip cookie when it emerges from the oven, the milk chocolate chips melting delicately in the rich, buttery dough.  However, many vegans feel that the satisfaction that they derive from eating a vegan cookie is actually greater than the satisfaction that non-vegans find in one of these tasty, buttery morsels.  When a vegan enjoys a vegan cookie, they are able to enjoy it without any guilt.

For one thing, almost any vegan cookie is healthier than a traditional cookie.  A vegan cookie often contains delicious and nutritious ingredients like applesauce and whole wheat flour, which are high in important nutrients like vitamin c and fiber respectively.  By contrast, a traditional cookie is loaded with fat, sugar, and empty carbohydrates with no real nutritional value.  A vegan cookie is a tasty dessert treat that can be enjoyed without any guilt or weight gain by dieters, or by anyone who makes their health a priority in their life.  A vegan cookie may not be as delicious during the moment of taking that first bite as a traditional, non-vegan cookie is, but in the long run a vegan cookie can leave you feeling healthier, happier, and more satisfied with your choice than a traditional cookie.  Often, when people indulge in rich, buttery desserts with a lot of calories and not much nutritional value, they feel guilty and regretful as soon as they are finished eating, or when they climb on the scale and see that they have gained a few pounds.  When a vegan eats a vegan cookie, they can enjoy it while knowing that regret is not in their future.

The debate that rages over whether a vegan cookie is really more enjoyable than a traditional cookie is also applicable to many other vegan and non-vegan foods.  For instance, as a substitute for cheese, many vegans eat vegan cheese made out of soy.  Vegan cheese may not be as delicious to all tastes as traditional dairy cheese is, but vegan cheese can be enjoyed without any guilt.  Many people are aware of the dairy industry's continued abuse of the cows that it relies on to produce the milk that later becomes cheese, and few people want to consciously support an inhumane industry.  For people who feel a strong ethical responsibility to boycott the dairy industry, vegan cheese can prove to be much more delicious than traditional cheese.  Like a vegan cookie, vegan cheese can prove to be quite tasty in the long run.
