Parents need to be involved in every aspect of their childrens education. Talk to your kids about what is going on at school. Ask them what they are learning. Find out who their friends are. Talk about their teachers. Listen to what they are saying. Your children need to know that you are interested in their life, and their education is a major part of that.
Another way to help your kids education is to read with your kids. Statistics prove that children who are read to by their parents do better in school than children who are not. Value reading in your home. Keep it stocked with books and magazines. Let your children see you reading. Talk about the books you read with your children. Help them learn to predict what will happen next. Point out words that they see in every day life, and this will help them to learn the value of reading.
Another way to enhance your kid's education is to make sure they are getting their homework done. A great way to do this is to have a family routine that incorporates a specific time each day for homework. As this routine becomes a part of every day life, you will avoid the nightly fights over whether or not your child has his or her homework done.
Show your children that you have high expectations for them. Make them take challenging courses, and tell them that you know they can succeed. Encourage them by praising their efforts. Do not put too much emphasis on the letter grade, but rather on the effort. Praise your child when he or she does their utmost in a class. Do not wait for your child’s teacher to contact you. When they do, there is usually a serious problem. Stop in from time to time and find out just how well your child is doing. Even if they are doing well, find out what areas they can improve in. Staying informed will help you know how to best encourage your child to succeed.
Being involved in your kid's education is the most important thing you can do for your child to help them succeed in life overall. Children whose parents are involved in their education have higher self-esteem, higher grade point averages, are better behaved overall, and are more likely then their peers to go on to continued education.
