How Do You Determine If Homeschool Is The Best Course For Your Child?

If you are considering homeschool for your child you need to determine what approach you will be taking. A major question you need to ask yourself is "Why do I feel my child will be better off under my educational guidance?" This is a very important question when considering what technique you will be using to provide your child the knowledge you wish them to receive. First you must establish why you feel that the public school system is not meeting the needs of you and your child.
There are many reasons a parent may feel that their child should not attend a public school. For some children or teens social reasons may be what pushes them to consider homeschool. In those cases a child may not be reaching their learning potential because they do not feel as if they fit in or feel that they are being picked on. In this case you must take into careful consideration the options available. You must determine how each of these options can help your child the most. Homeschool may not be the best decision. First you need to determine what it is that makes your child feel this way or what they are being picked on for. In many cases homeschool will have a negative affect on your child if they are having problems with socializing. Isolated a child in this way will not help your child advance in socialization skills. I would highly recommend talking to your child, and the school counselor. It may also be suggested that you allow your child to speak with a child counselor if the problem is self-esteem issues. All children have them but some children need extra help getting through them. If there is another public or private school they can attend this will allow them a fresh start and allow them to learn in a more positive environment without isolating them from children of their own age.

If your reasons to homeschool your child is due to learning difficulties then you must be very knowledgeable about the needs of your child. Every child learns in a different way. Many children can learn in the classroom without much difficulty. However some children need extra care and attention in order to learn. This does not mean that child is not intelligent, look at Albert Einstein. Albert Einstein had to attend a special needs school due to his inability to learn in the same manner as the majority of children and he is considered a genius. Some children with diagnosed behavioral disorders need this special attention as well to school home study. Home school is an option. However it is important to know that the school system is required to see to these needs by Federal law and in extreme cases they my be required to send your child to another school and pay all the costs incurred if they cannot meet your child’s needs. Your school is also responsible for testing your child if there appears to be any type of learning disability. I recommend speaking to the teacher and possibly the principal about the problem if you feel that your child has special needs that are not being met.

If you do feel that you are qualified to homeschool your child then you need to determine what type of teaching technique or combination of techniques you would like to use. Though it is not entirely necessary to study learning theories before beginning it can be very useful. There are parents who may not need to study these techniques simply because they are very in tune to how their child processes information. One very good way to learn what approaches work best with your child is by spending time with them after school working on their homework and going over in class assignments. This is also a good way to evaluate if you child’s poor grades are a result of your child not trying or the teacher not taking the time to make sure your child understands the assignment given to them. By doing this you can learn through trial and error what works best for your child. However by studying various learning theories and teaching techniques you will be better prepared to assist your child. Not only will you have a greater grasp on what you already know about your child’s needs these sources can also provide you with great ideas on how to conduct lessons designed for a child’s special needs.
