The Midwest area of the country will celebrate Sweetest Day on the third Saturday in October. Originating in the 1920s, this regional holiday has began to grow and is celebrated in sporadic locations throughout the US in addition to the Midwest region. Similar to Valentine's Day in February, Sweetest Day has became a romantic holiday though its origins are friendship based. It began as a goodwill gesture of a philanthropist to those who were elderly or children and has evolved into a modern romantic holiday.

It is amazing how one word can be misinterpreted over the years so badly that after 80 years of use in a particular context the word will change meaning completely. No one will deny that Sweetest Day is a holiday created by corporate America to sell more goodies to the public but the original meaning of Sweetest Day was not what it has become. Sweetest Day was never meant to compete with Valentine’s Day.
