Louis Johnson who was the Defense Secretary of the U.S., declared in 1949, August 31st, the start of Armed Forces Day. This day was made to supplant the Air Force, Army and Navy's separate days celebrated. Armed Forces day became a celebration on one day for all these units to be supported and celebrated in one single unit, which was the U.S Defense Department. Armed Forces Day is now celebrated every third Saturday in May.
