Pagan is a word that comes from the word Paganism, which comes from the Latin word paganus, which means an old country dweller, rustic. Pagan beliefs is a term that is very broadly used, and can and is used to pretty much define other types of faith that are outside Judaism, Christianity, Islam, etc. as well as a few others.

A lot of religious people like to yell and complain that the true religious meaning behind Christmas is lost in the commercialism and other aspects of Christmas. In reality much of the celebrations we enjoy as part of our Christmas celebration today come from pagan celebrations that were started as far back as the ancient Romans. The celebration of Christmas today is as pagan as it is religious.
