It all began with Estee Lauder and her husband as co-founders of Estee Lauder Companies. Estee lauder was born with the name Josephine Esther Mentzer in Corona, Queens, New York. She was the daughter of Hungarian Jewish immigrants. In 1930 she married Joseph Lauter and they had two sons. Estee and Joseph divorced in 1939 and remarried each other in 1942. They changed their family surname from Lauter to “Lauder” in the late 1930’s. Their marriage lasted until Joseph’s death in 1982.
Leonard Lauder, the eldest son and Chief Executive of Estee Lauder Makeup is now the Chairman of the Board. The youngest son, Ronald Lauder, is a very prominent philanthropist and property developer in Berlin.
Estee Lauder passed away at age 97 at her home in Manhattan of Cardiopulmonary failure.
Estee Lauder was the only woman listed on the Time Magazine’s 1988 list of The 20 Most Influential Business Geniuses of the 20th Century. She also received the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
