Today the residents in Buena Park, California, who live only 10 minutes from Disneyland, give little thought to what existed on that land long before the appearance of the E-Zone. They would no doubt register looks of surprise, if they were allowed to discover that Buena Park might have been a cattle ranch instead of a city.
The land where Buena Park now stands was once part of Rancho Los Coyotes. That Rancho represented one of 5 divisions of the land granted in 1783 to Manuel Nieto. Later the Rancho Los Coyotes became a subdivided into even smaller ranchos. Then in 1885 James Whitaker, a wholesale grocer from Chicago, saw the land that was then part of the Stearns, Rancho, and he thought he could use it for raising cattle. A grocer with cattle would have had an excellent chance for getting cheap dairy products.
But where Mr. Whitaker saw cattle grazing the owners of the Santa Fe Railroad saw people walking the streets of a town square in Buena Park, California. The Santa Fe Railway passed right by the land that Mr. Whitaker had purchased. Therefore, the owners of the Railway encouraged the new landowner to create a town on his land. They convinced Whitaker to obtain the needed papers from officials in Los Angeles County.
The town of Buena Park was formed in 1887. The first industry in Buena Park, California was the Lily Creamery. Residents of Buena Park did not take steps to incorporate until 1953. This incorporation took place just two years before the building of Disneyland on land in the neighboring town of Anaheim.
After tourists began to descend on the area to visit Disneyland, then they also made note of the proximity of the amusement park at Knotts Berry Farm. Then as the residents in Buena Park, California realized that they sat next to one of California's biggest tourist attractions, they decided to try catching the attention of those tourists. Their efforts led to the creation of the E-Zone.
