The phrase "traditional surrogacy" probably seemed a bit presumptuous in the early 1980s. At that time, the effort to introduce in vitro fertilization into the U.S. had just gotten under way. At that time there was nothing at all traditional about the idea that a surrogate mother might carry a fertilized egg that had been conceived in the laboratory.

Surrogacy mothers step forward agreeing to carry to term and give birth to a child that will be given up at birth for another couple or individual to raise as their own.
