If you like getting into a large group and then shouting at each other then playing Outburst is for you. It is a game where thinking fast can get you points and the first team to score 60 points wins. It is also a game that allows a group of people to get together and shout out ideas a suggestions at the top of their lungs for 60 seconds at a time which is always fun.
The rules of playing Outburst are pretty simple and very easy to understand. Someone from your group chooses a card with a heading on one side of it. Then you place that card in a special box that only allows you to see the heading you are guessing on. Along with the heading on the card is a list of 10 words that are associated with that heading. Your team has 60 seconds to compile a list of words you think come under that heading and then when the 60 seconds are over you compare that list with the list of headings on the card. Every match is a point and the winning team is the first team to reach 60 points. The way you compile your list is when the timer starts everyone in the group starts shouting suggestions and one person acts as secretary and begins to write the suggestions down. When the time is up the shouting is supposed to stop and the you compare the list you made from shouting with the list that appears on the card. There is also a roll of a die when the round is over to add bonus points to the score. It can get quite competitive and crazy and very loud when you start to get into it.
An example of playing Outburst would go something like this. Let’s say you pulled a card with the heading “Things On A Bus” on it. Your team’s job is to them compile a list of one word guesses as to what might be on the list on the card for things on a bus. If your team said “driver” and “driver” is one of the ten things listed on the clue card then you get one point. If you guessed “smelly hobo” well then you get no points because that is two words. If you guessed “mugger” and the word “mugger” does not appear on the card’s list of ten then you get no points for that guess. All guesses that can be written down within the 60 second time limit are valid and the best part about the game is that everyone is shouting their suggestions to one person and that person has to keep up with the group. While this also stands as the single greatest limitation in the game it also remains as the one thing that keeps the game going. If all of the players were allowed to make their own lists then there wouldn’t be any outbursts and it is difficult to say that you are having fun playing Outburst when there are no outburst going on at all. At the end of the game the winning team is the team that gets 60 points first. It is a lot of fun and a great game for parties.
