Graduation parties are a rite of passage for someone who is leaving one stage of their life and moving on to another. Whether the student is graduating from high school and moving on to college or graduating from college and moving on to the real world a graduation party is a great way to send them off right. It would probably be a good idea to make sure the student is involved in the planning.
For high school students the great graduation party begins with the right setting. Talk to your high school graduate and ask them where they would like their great graduation party to take place. When they tell you, and you realize that there is no way you can afford the party they want, go ahead and ask them what they need to make the backyard of your house suitable for their great graduation party. Be warned that for high school students the thing to have at their graduation party is a live band and many times that live band is their friends from school. The band will probably be very loud, not very good, and expect to be paid. The band will think they sound good, and their friends will be nice about it, but you won’t like it. Remember that this is not your day so, as long as your neighbors agree not to sue, go ahead and have your student’s band play. The worst thing you can do is know that your student wants a live band and then go and hire a band yourself. It isn’t the same thing, it won’t be good enough, and they won’t like it. This is the one event in your student’s life that you will just have to let go and let them do the things they want. Do not send out invitations to your student’s friends. Your student will probably really hate that and be very embarrassed by it. If you want to send out invitations to family and friends of the family then that is fine. But your high school student will not go for sending out invitations to their friends. You are probably going to have to mix your family with your student’s friends for this party so be aware of that.
College students are a little different as they have a tendency to be a little more mature or, depending on what they did for four years in college, they are a little worn out from parties and don’t mind their parents doing a little get together to celebrate their graduation. A college graduation party can probably be a little more subdued that the high school one and more than likely the guest list will be mostly family and friends of the family. Usually a college student is only a couple of weeks away from taking on their new job so they do not have a lot of time to help plan a graduation party. Just keep it simple and make sure there is a lot of food and drink. A college graduation party thrown by the parents will probably be a nice change of pace from four years of God knows what so make it the event you want it to be and your student will probably think it was a very nice event and thank you for it.
