Have You Heard About The Detox Diet?

Added: 10/24/2006

The detox diet is not a new fad on the market. As a matter of fact, there are many who call for the periodic detoxification of the body not just for dietary reasons, but also for health and longevity. So what is it that has diet aficionados, dieters themselves, and even holistic health practitioners clamor for a more widespread acceptance of this form of diet. Yet what is hiding behind this ominous term?

The new detox diet is actually not all that new. As a matter of fact, the idea of the detox diet is to simply remove from your body those kinds of substances that may harm it in any way, shape or form. Generally speaking, much of this purging of toxic substances is done via the food and liquid intake, since this is the kind of substance control you are able to exercise on your body.

Sure, in the old days the term for detox referred to the van that would collect those who were passed out from alcohol and take them to the hospital to dry out. Yet as more and more holistic health practices have entered the mainstream and have become accepted treatments, as well as standards, it has become obvious that there are other kinds of detoxification that have nothing to do with alcohol, but that seek to remove substances that may be just as harmful to your body.

“The new detox diet” may be the battle cry of those who are actively promoting a book, but for those who really look into this diet phenomenon, the detox diet is actually more concerned with cleansing the body one system at a time. For this reason, before you embark of detoxifying your body, be clear what it means to do so. Probably the worst thing you could do is go out, purchase a bunch of herbs and tonics, and then mix and match them all in an effort to do something good for your body. This will probably not only do more harm than good, but in addition to the foregoing may also nullify any positive effect that some of your treatments may have on your body.

If you wonder if it is time to partake of the detox diet, take a good hard look at the foods you eat and the drinks you imbibe. Do you eat mostly whole grain foods and organic vegetables, or do you primarily reply on soda, coffee, and prepackaged foods? Do you feel somewhat sluggish, even if you get enough sleep? Do you have a hard time concentrating, and do you find that even when you eat snacks, things do not necessarily pick up, but instead may cause you to crash later on?

If this sounds hauntingly familiar, you might be able to get a great benefit from the detox diet. Of course, you will need to keep in mind that this kind of diet is only to be done for a short period of time, and is not in and of itself a lifestyle choice. The goal is to rid your body of chemicals that you may have ingested, and then to prepare it for the ingestion of healthier choices.

Of course, the detox diet is not for everyone. As a matter of fact, if you suffer from any ailments, you will want to check in with your health care provider first, before you take any steps toward detoxification! Additionally, if you are good to go on your diet but suddenly realize bodily side effect, such as tiredness or extreme irritability, stop what you are doing and seek professional help. After all, the goal is to feel better, healthier, and have your mind as well as your body benefit from your actions, not to feel terrible, and have every positive aspect of your diet nullified by the very actions you are taking! So go ahead and visit your health care professional, and if you get the green light, start getting rid of the toxins that have built up in your body.
