Gymnastics is a sport involving the performance of a sequence of movements that require physical strength, flexibility, balance, endurance, gracefulness, and kinesthetic awareness. All of this athleticism allows gymnasts to perform handstands, handsprings, split leaps, aerials, and cartwheels. The sport of gymnastics was created out of the beauty practices and the fitness regime used by the ancient Greeks. These physical skills involved obtaining the skills for mounting and mounting a horse and circus performance skills. The ancient Greeks philosophy involved the idea that physical fitness for al Greek citizens was essential for both their physical and mental well-being. In fact, all Greek cites had a courtyard that was used for jumping, running, and wrestling. However, as the Roman Empire came into power, Greek gymnastics took a back seat to military training. But, despite this temporary glitch to the sport of gymnastics, today gymnastics is alive and well. Plus, it is a very popular Olympic sport. There are many events that both men and women compete in during the Olympics and other competitions such as the World Championships and the National Championships.
Women gymnasts compete in four events and men gymnasts compete in six events in each gymnastics meet. Women compete on the vault, balance beam, floor exercise, and uneven bars. Men compete on the vault, floor exercise, parallel bars, still rings, pommel horse, and high bar. Many men and women gymnasts wish to make the Olympic team and the World championship team; however only a select group makes those teams. The sport of gymnastics is very popular internationally and there are superpowers in the world of gymnastics. Both of the United States gymnastics teams are very strong. The Russian gymnastics teams are also very strong and the Romanian women’s gymnastics team is very strong. In fact, Nadia Comaneci, a Romanian gymnast was the first gymnast to receive a perfect ten at the 1976 Olympic Games. Today, in gymnastics, a perfect 10 is no more.
It is also important to remember to be very careful when performing gymnastic because people can get hurt easily. This is because of the impact that gymnastics has on gymnasts joins, bones, and muscles. Also, remember that gymnasts work hard.
