Gwaii Haanas National Park-A Great Vacation Destination

Gwaii Haanas national park is situated just off the British Columbia coast. Gwaii Haanas is a huge national park covering 900 square miles of land, this means that you can be sure that you will always find something to do when you visit this national park. There are many water activities that take place in the national park such as, rafting, swimming and many more. While for those of you that prefer the dry land there is the traditional hiking and cycling and even fishing. All in all you can be sure that you will enjoy your day out at Gwaii Haanas national park.

Gwaii Haanas national park sits on the southern part of Haida Gwaii, or Queen Charlotte Islands.  Queen Charlotte Islands is a remote, secluded archipelago off the British Columbia coast.  These islands are located approximately 400 miles north of Vancouver. 

The Gwaii Haanas national park consists of 138 islands and almost 900 square miles of land.  The land of the Gwaii Haanas national park is very diverse and protects the legacy of Haida culture.  The culture of the Gwaii Haanas national park has been kept alive by Native Americans for hundreds of generations. 

Gwaii Haanas national park is known as a protected area which is managed by the Government of Canada and the council of the Haida nation.  Visitors will also realize that the Gwaii Haanas national area has a vast array of wildlife and plants.  Gwaii Haanas national park is the home to a large population of sea lions.  There is also a very large population of 750,000 seabirds.  This wildlife makes for a great sight seeing trip if that is what you are looking for on your vacation.  Sight seeing is also a very big tourist attraction as you can take a tour guided by a park professional ranger that knows where to take you to see the best wildlife.  A guided trip by one of these rangers does not really cost that much either.  You can pay for a whole day trip, a half day trip, or pay by the hour.  Also, private tours can also be given if you want a really intimate setting.  Most of the tourists also bring along cameras so that they can preserve these memories for a life time. 

Even though the sight seeing is a great asset to the Gwaii Haanas national area, the real gem of the park is the outdoor recreational activities.  There are tons of recreational activities to participate in if sight seeing does not suit your needs.  Some of these activities include: sea kayaking, sailboat and power boat charters, camping, hiking backpacking, rock climbing, as well as tons of other activities. 

Some of the most exciting fun can be had on the water.  This is where the kids will want to spend most of their time.  You can take up canoeing, kayaking, rafting, swimming, and boating.  Also, do not miss out on the fishing adventures.  You can take yourself out on a boat and fish for either freshwater or saltwater fish.  Be your own guide and fish where and when you want to.  In between your time fishing take some time to soak up the sun, or check out the wildlife on the shore.  If you happen to be a serious fisherman there are also options for you.  Feel free to hire one of the many guides who will take you out on the water in their own guide boat and show you where to pull in that prized fish!
