File sharing through the Internet is not a simple process of grabbing video and MP3 files and raising lawsuits here and there. The exciting peer to peer modern technology has many features and applications. Gnutella system is the decentralized and unmanaged network, devoted to sharing, searching and downloading files of various types, including music, video, software and many more.

Internet file sharing is a type of activity performed by a community of users, connected to certain file sharing system. Such a system allows users to share files and to search for files within the server, to which the community is connected. Some file sharing applications and services, offer additional features like chatting. And some are limited to working with only certain types of files, like Napster with MP3 only.

The Gnutella network is devoted to sharing, searching and acquiring of any file type, however not offering any extra features like chatting. This peer to peer system of file sharing has client software also acting as a server - often this software is called a servant. There are various types of servants, however all of them performing similar functions.

When you publish files to s file sharing system, you interact with the servant application only to access the service. The file sharing servant connects to Gnutella and responds to the continuous search queries from the community, which means no search engine is needed. The files you share are kept on your computer and are not shared. Gnutella system shares a file through copying it into a special file sharing directory, and the servants can scan and remember this file. The Gnutella file sharing system scans and indexes the file by itself, the user has almost nothing to do but enjoy the service. There is option available for the user to share a file for a limited period of time - if you turn your servant off, the file sharing session will stop.

The time has come for peer to peer file sharing. When it is used in a way Gnutella uses it, the Internet turns into a large communications space. Instead of accessing hundreds of different servers, you reach other users' computers directly. With the development of peer to peer file sharing technology, one should start realizing the amazing potential of this method of information transfer.

If only the search engines could use peer to peer network to perform searching! This way it would happen like this: a user submits a query, the search engine submits it to the peer to peer network and gets back the results. This way the problem of finding and indexing dynamic pages would be solved and the search engines would provide real time, current, most up-to-date results, because each peer to peer search takes place at the time the user has requested it.

Peer to peer file sharing technology in general and the Gnutella file sharing system in particular obviously have bright future ahead. There is no doubt that most of the information in future will be transferred through peer to peer technology. Have fun file sharing with Gnutella!
