Funny Man Bill Murray

For years Bill Murray has made the world laugh whether it is as a cast member of Saturday Night Live or in one of his classic comedies. But recently Bill Murray has been taking on different kinds of roles and then got himself nominated for an Oscar for his performance in the 2003 movie Lost In Translation. Considering the range of work Bill Murray has done it is safe to say he is a very talented actor.
Bill Murray was born on September 21, 1950 in Wilmette, Illinois. Bill Murray would caddie at local golf courses after he got out of high school to put himself through Loyola Academy but Bill Murray was far from the ideal student. He had no interest in academics and much rather preferred to waste time making people laugh than go to class. But as his life kept rolling on Bill Murray began to realize that making people laugh wasn’t such a waste of time after all. He tried to take pre-med classes at Regis College in the state of Denver but Bill Murray’s college career was ended was he was arrested for possession of marijuana. After he dealt with his drug bust he went on to join the National Lampoon Radio Hour with such future comedy greats as Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi. While with National Lampoon Bill Murray was part of improv performances and the occasional recordings that would get released as albums. One of these albums showed the promise of the group as they had such classic sketches as Mr. Roger’s Neighborhood and Orange Juice. In 1975 Bill Murray got his chance to really make an impact as he joined two shows called Saturday Night Live. The first was the comedy sketch show Saturday Night Live which Bill Murray was selected as one of the original cast members. The other was Saturday Night Live With Howard Cosell which failed almost immediately after it got started. When the Howard Cosell show was done Bill Murray moved over to the Saturday Night Live sketch comedy show and the rest, as they say, is history.

To list the classic comedy movies Bill Murray has been in would take encyclopedia like room but we can surely hit on his progression from Saturday Night Live star to movie star. In 1979 Bill Murray found his first taste of real movie success with the off the wall comedy Meatballs that had him playing an over the top camp counselor for a summer camp. Bill Murray’s energy and performance carried that movie and made it a huge summer success for 1979. In 1980 Bill Murray took on a role as the famed author Hunter S Thompson in the strange movie Where The Buffalo Roam. Where The Buffalo Roam never became the success that Bill Murray thought it could be but it once again displayed his high energy comedic talents that were starting to make him one of the top comedy actors in Hollywood. Then in 1981 Bill Murray got his break out role as the wise cracking army guy John Winger in the wildly successful comedy Stripes. The critics and the public loved Bill Murray’s performance in the movie Stripes and it was after this movie that Bill Murray’s career really started to pick up.

For the rest of his career Bill Murray has created one of the most impressive resumes in comedy acting history. Movies such as Ghostbusters, What About Bob?, Scrooged, and Groundhog Day all have helped to make Bill Murray a comedy icon. Then he would take roles like the role of Bunny Breckenridge in the dark comedy Ed Wood and Bill Murray started to show his real range. He would take roles like Garfield the cat in the Garfield movies and then get nominated for an Oscar in his work in Lost In Translation. Bill Murray has proven that he is a true all around actor along with being a comedy legend.
