The Ute Indians were the first people to be in the area of what today is Summit County. For thirty years (from 1810-1840), the first ‘white men’ in the area trapped beaver. The Ute Indians called these ‘white men’ “mountain men”.
In 1870, mining was started in the mountain area. Then in 1873, the town of Frisco started to spring up. By 1879, when Frisco became officially chartered the town grew to 250 people. The mining business grew and boomed until around 1918. After the depression in the 1930s, the population fell to about 18. The mine at Frisco continued to keep going and soon the population was 50. After the skiing business took off in the Rockies, the town grew back up to 2800. There are now several Frisco hotels to accommodate the 3 million tourists that come each year just for the skiing.
