Do you remember the games you played as a child? Did you ever play tag? Do you remember how many times you and your friends decided to play freeze tag? Do you now recall the rules of that game?
In case your memory has failed you, here are the rules for the original freeze tag: One person would be "it." That person then ran after all the others and tried to tag them. Once a person had been tagged then he or she had to "freeze." If one of the other players managed to tag a frozen player, then that player became unfrozen.
Now with the advent of computer games one does not need a large area in order to play freeze tag. By using virtual players one can play freeze tag at the computer. Today games of freeze tag typically rely on the added thrill of team competition. If a player from one team is tagged by any player from the opposing team then that tagged player must freeze. The rules for helping a player to become unfrozen are likewise slightly different.
Anytime a team member remains for three seconds next to a frozen player from the same team, then that player is declared to be unfrozen. Someone who might be said to play great freeze tag is a player who concentrates on thawing his or her teammates. Such a player appreciates the true spirit of team competition.
In other words in the modern game of freeze tag, a modification of Quake 3 and Team Arena, the players need to focus on working with the other members of their team. In this respect modern freeze tag differs greatly from the original freeze tag. In the modern game players do not always feel free to just watch their own backs. Today those who choose to play freeze tag are expected to help with watching the backs of their fellow team players.
With the increased emphasis on team play certain new strategies have emerged. Two different strategies help a player to better guard the backs of all the other players on his or her team. An understanding of those strategies can transform someone who has just learned how to play freeze tag into someone who with the ability to play great freeze tag.
One such strategy has been mentioned above. That is the strategy that calls on a player to concentrate on thawing the frozen members of the team. This strategy works well unless the opposing team has adopted the other excellent team strategy.
An equally effective strategy in the modern game of freeze tag calls for the team members to attack enemy players as they seek to spend three seconds next to a frozen player. All of the members of one team will, as they proceed to play freeze tag, watch closely for enemy players who try to steal three seconds of time next to a frozen teammate.
Sometimes the team players who adopt this strategy can find a way to set a trap. They might choose to lure an opposing player over to a frozen teammate and then suddenly allow one or more of their own to emerge from the shadows. The enemy would then be prevented from thawing another frozen player. If teams can mange to use both of the above strategies simultaneously then those teams will soon be playing some really great freeze tag.
