Long before the filmmakers of California had produced movies about flying and sex, Livermore was a region of California designated for agricultural use. That all changed in 1942, when Livermore became the site of a Navy flight training facility. So even before Tom Cruise appeared on the Hollywood scene, even before that actor was born, young men who aspired to become Navy pilots also thought at times about sex. Livermore women could attest to that fact.
More than one Navy pilot dated the women of Livermore. More than one of the many Livermore weddings placed a uniformed groom at the altar. Later more than one of those couples found their concerns drifting away from sex. Livermore couples, at least those who had children, soon needed to turn their attention to the existing threat to their baby boys and girls. Livermore couples had to take action in response to the discoveries made on Livermore land.
After the Atomic Energy Commission began its program for weapons design at Livermore, then some very harmful chemicals began to leak into the Livermore soil. Attention had not been paid to those chemicals back in 1952, when the AEC programs first began. By the 1970s, however, the evidence of the Livermore contaminants could be seen in the deformities suffered by many baby boys and girls. Livermore asked for a chemical analysis of its soil.
After that analysis had been completed then the parents in Livermore found that three letters could represent much more than sex. Livermore parents learned quickly about trichloroethylene (TCE) and volatile organic compounds (VOC). They also learned about tritium and various other metals. All of those chemicals had been found in the Livermore soil. All of those chemicals had been contributing to the appearance in Livermore hospitals of increasing numbers of deformed babies.
The government came under immediate pressure to clean-up this Livermore mess. The residents of Livermore wanted the young people at the future Livermore weddings to be free from worries about possible damage to their anticipated families. Fortunately for the residents of Livermore the government did take action, and it also began to decrease its emphasis on nuclear research.
By the time that a new generation of Livermore young people had started to watch movies such as Top Gun, and by the time that they had taken a greater interest in sex, Livermore Laboratories had introduced new avenues of research. Scientists at the Livermore Laboratories had gotten financial backing for research into new forms of energy. In addition, those scientists at Livermore joined the scientists at Los Alamos in exploring new biomedical advances.
Some of those advances related to the new field of molecular biology and focused on the changes in the genetic material. They highlighted the need for constant effort to prevent a return of the Livermore contaminants. They underscored the connection of biology and sex. Livermore parents relied on the newest medical advances to assure the health of their children.
