What are the flaming and flaming text?  Flaming is when a person goes into an internet chat room or message board forum, sometimes even in email, and deliberately says something to cause discord.  This is often personal attacks and insults, not simple opinions that may not be popular.  The flaming text will usually say something offensive about a person's lifestyle, their family, and their friends, even if the the flaming does not even know the person.  It is all done for shock value, and to trigger negative responses.  However, it is NOT considered to be flaming text when someone is stating their views and opinions, even though they may not be popular with the rest of the crowd.  Unless someone is personally attacked, it is not considered flaming.

One question that comes to many people's mind is why the flaming text in so many online chat areas and message board forums?  There are a number of reasons people choose to use flaming text to be disruptive.  Some people just find great entertainment in annoying or angering others.  Others are just mad at the world, and will use flaming text as an outlet to their stress.  Finally, some people just like to show authority, and they feel using flaming text will help them accomplish their feat.  Flaming text is most often used in online chat rooms and message board forums, but can also occur in email and instant messages.

There are a few ways to prevent flaming text from ruining your online experience.  Firstly, if someone tries to bait you by posting a personal insult directed at you, you can type "flamingtext", and that will alert everyone else as to what this person is trying to accomplish.  Seeing "flamingtext" as a message, many regular members of the particular online area will choose to ignore the flaming text.  Another way to prevent falling victim to the flaming, you can avoid controversial topics, that often encourage the flamers to come out.

If you find yourself a victim to the flaming, try to ignore it.  Many chat rooms and message board forums have an "ignore" feature, where you can filter out what you do not care to read.  If the particular chat room or message board forum does not have this feature, and a flamer is getting to you, go do something else for a while.  Chances are, when you return later, with a clearer head, you will not let the flaming text bother you so much.  Ignoring the flaming is always the best thing to do.
