Grandparents offer grandchildren an opportunity to learn about the concepts bound up in a society that existed before their own parents were born. The experiences of grandparents can provide grandchildren with a learning experience second to none. Children usually generate numerous questions about why or how things got to be the way they are and who better to answer them than their grandparents?

In the 2000 Census, there was an estimated 2.5 million households where grandparents were raising grandchildren. Of course, this does not begin to count those who are raising their nieces, nephews, and even cousins. Some are even raising their nieces and nephew&'s children. Fifty-seven percent of grandparents raising grandchildren are still in the work force and seventeen percent are living in poverty.
