The largest of the Greek Islands and fifth largest island in the Mediterranean Sea, Crete, provides great opportunities for tourists and locals to practice naturism in Crete. Naturism is the practice of going completely nude (without clothing) in a communal or group setting. Those who practice naturism view it as a way of life. It is seen as way to be connected to the elements (e.g. sun, water, and air) and cleanse one’s body, mind, and spirit.
Naturism is the practice of going completely nude (without clothing) in a public or private setting. True naturists view the practice of going nude as a healing, health conscious and spiritual experience. The act allows the body to be in total contact with the natural world (e.g. sun, wind, air, and water) for which it is a part of. This oneness with nature and freedom from the social and psychological restrictions of clothing nourishes and cleanses the body, mind, and spirit.
Although naturism in Crete is practiced on many beaches, there are only a few licensed or official areas designated for naturism. However, a number of places allow people to practice naturism. Most of these places are quiet, distant beaches and coves. However, there are situations and times in which nudity is not tolerated. For instance, if a snack bar is located on a beach, it will generally display a “no nudity” sign. On the weekends and in July and August many Greek families go to the beach; therefore, it may be inappropriate to disrobe when sharing a beach with them. Even though naturism in Crete is tolerated, the island is deeply traditional and public nudity may embarrass some people.
Beaches on the south coast such as those listed below are much more tolerable places to practice naturism in Crete.
Paleochora – Naturists still use a portion of this long, sandy beach.
Sougia – The eastern end of the beach is reserved for those who want to go nude.
Agia Roumeli – Naturists will find a comfortable spot away from the main beach toward the east and across the Samaria River.
Agios Pavlos – This long, nearly deserted beach is about one hour’s walk from Agia Roumeli.
Glykanera or Sweet Water Beach – This spectacular beach is located halfway between Loutro and Hora Sfakion.
Filaki – This beach is located just outside of Hora Sfakion. Hotel Vritomartis, a naturist hotel, is located near the beach.
Frangokastello – Naturists will find a nice, sandy beach approximately one-half mile east of the main beach.
Komos Beach – One of the best naturist beaches on Crete is located to the north of Matala. Sea turtles have made Komos one of their nesting sites, therefore exercise caution when using this beach.
The beautiful island of Crete is an ideal place to explore or practice naturism. There are many beaches that allow people to practice nudity. There are also many tiny and secluded coves that provide serene and private atmospheres in which people can lose their inhibitions practice naturism in Crete.
