What Is a Naturist?

Get ready to get an earful of all the stuff that you were too afraid to ask the neighborhood naturists. But for starters, what exactly is a naturist? A naturist practices a form of social nudity that involves letting it all hang out, in every since of the word, in a social setting. The general idea of a naturist is to participate in the same activities the the Average Joe participates, only rather than being fully clothed, naturists like to live it up in the buff. Ironically, naturist activities are starchly non-sexual and often involve friendly elements that are inviting to the naturist family. Yep, that's right, behind every naturist, there is a naturist family. The average naturist is incredibly cozy within the clothing-optional world of beaches, wooded areas, and lakes. Clothing optional bike rides are also a big event for the naturist and the naturist family.

Naturism and Nudism-What's The Difference?

Perhaps not suprisingly, naturism, the art of the naturist, and nudism are virtually one in the same, although there are a few distinguishing differences. Starting with the similarities, both the naturist and the nudist exercise a continuing social and political movement with their love for social nudity. But then there are the differences, while the naturist is more family-oriented, hence the existence of the naturist family. The nudist doesn't necessarily need the support of family, nudists are more than content strutting their bare backside down New Jersey's Gunnison Beach all by their lonesome. Geography also plays a role in whether a supporter of social nudity is called a nudist or a naturalist. While nudist is as much about of the American vocabulary as the word "yankee," European social nudity lovers most often latched to the label of "naturalist." However, the term "naturalist" is used widely and interchangably with the word "nudist."

Social Issues of the Naturalist

Apparently, going naked doesn't make life any easier for the naturalist or the naturalist family. Expectations about what is acceptable within varying social nudity supporting groups differs depending on that group. And the naturalist is no stranger to controversy amongst their own. There are many nudists who will only wear clothing when it is absolutely prudent, in fact, this description could probably be applied to the average nudist. A naturalist, on the other hand, simply want to enjoy the family fun-filled activities of life...naked.

There's also been the social issue of whether or not pubic hair should be allowed of naturalist and social nudity community group members. Opponents of the pubs argue that pubic hair does not foster complete nudity. Supporters of keeping a hairy security blanket over the genitals cite the naturalist's long standing acceptance of all bodies regardless of shape, size, color, or genital appearance.

But those genitals just keep popping up when it comes to social issues afflicting the naturalist. The naturalist and the nudists shun overt sexuality, therefore the community remains divided on the issue of whether or not piercing of the clitoris, scrotum, or nipples spells overt sexuality. After all, a shiny piece of jewelry does have a way of drawing attention to the genitals. A big no-no in the world of the naturist.
