Every Hindu Marriage Is Unique

Added: 11/27/2005

Since every hindu couple is unlike any other, it makes sense that no hindu marriage will be exactly like any other. Many hindu couples today are planning their weddings to be unlike any other, making some adjustments to cater to modern sensibility while remaining respectful to and conscious of hindu culture and hindu religious beliefs. There are many elements of a traditional hindu marriage, including the outdoor ceremony, the mandap canopy, and the sacred fire, which many couples want to keep alive as the heart of the hindu marriage ritual.

Every hindu marriage is unique, and no two hindu religious ceremonies are exactly alike.  Hindu culture is rich in variation, and nowhere is this more apparent than in the many different variations in hindu marriage ceremonies.  Traditional hindu marriage ceremonies can often last for several days, but modern hindu couples sometimes choose shorter hindu marriage ceremonies which they feel will be more digestible and enjoyable for their guests while still retaining the most important parts of a hindu marriage ceremony and remaining respectful towards the rich heritage of hindu religious ceremonies.

Some hindu couples tying the knot create their own unique hindu marriage ceremonies which bring together traditions unique to hindu culture with other aspects of the wedding ritual which may be taken from other traditions, even sometimes the Christian tradition.  A hindu marriage is like any other marriage in any other tradition, in that each one is a unique ceremony which reflects the couple who are getting married.  Hindu religious ceremonies are no more or less hard and fast in the eyes of a couple undergoing a hindu marriage than Christian religious ceremonies are to a couple undergoing a Christian marriage.  There is no one single way to plan a hindu marriage ceremony.

Many hindu couples, even those with fairly unorthodox views about the rest of the ceremony, feel that it is important to have a master of ceremonies or priest who is familiar with hindu marriage ceremonies, hindu culture, and hindu religious beliefs.  Many hindu couples also prefer having a master of ceremonies or priest who can perform at least part of the hindu marriage ritual in Sanskrit.  Some couples choose to have their service in a variety of languages, but it is a rare hindu marriage ceremony which does not incorporate at least some spoken Sanskrit.

A traditional hindu marriage ceremony takes place outside in a natural setting, on natural ground rather than on pavement.  In a traditional outdoor hindu marriage ceremony, the wedding party is covered by a canopy called a mandap.  Not all hindu couples follow either of these traditions, and many alter them slightly.  For example, some hindu couples marrying in wintertime will build a mandap inside and perform the ceremony underneath it.  However, a lot of people across many different religious and cultural groups agree that an outdoor wedding is one of the most beautiful ceremonies imaginable.

In a traditional hindu marriage ceremony, there is a sacred fire under the mandap.  Different hindu couples follow this tradition of the sacred fire in different ways.  Many choose to have a small sacred fire for safety reasons, and to confine it within a dish or similar object.  However, depending on the setting of your unique hindu marriage ceremony, it may be possible to have a free, open fire.  If you do decide to have an unconfined sacred fire, it is important to keep an eye to safety, so make sure that you have extinguishers nearby just in case things get out of hand.

Done well and with ample precautions, a sacred fire can be a memorable part of a hindu marriage ceremony.
