European Youth Olympic Festival - A Fresh Conviction

In the recent years the significance of the European Youth Olympic Festival, known by its initials EYOF, is increasing far and wide. Now, what is European Youth Olympic Festival? It is a kind of biennial multi-sport event for youth athletes from the 48 member countries of the association of European Olympic Committes. It is to be noted, that the EYOF also has a summer edition, and that was held for the first time in Brussels, in the year 1991. The winter edition had its initiation two years later in Aosta.
It should be taken into considertion, that the first European Youth Olympic Festival or EYOF was held in 1991 under the name of the European Youth Olympic Days. It is to be noted that the idea for the first time was launched by the eminent Jacques Rogge, who was at the time the President of the European Olympic Committees (EOC), and also the President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), in the present days. The concept propounded by Rogge was supported above all by the EOC, and in 1991 Brussels happened to be the first to host the potential Olympians in summer sports (athletics, gymnastics, basketball, volleyball, swimming, table tennis, football, hockey, judo). To continue the success two years later the winter version of the European Youth Olympic Festival Winter was also held, and since then the event has taken place both in summer and winter sports every two (odd) years! If the picture is so bright, what are the future planning? In this respect it has been largely found, that the European Youth Olympic Festival reflects a long existing idea about the need for European athletes to have their own multi-sport competition which are nothing but similar to those held on other continents like the Asian Games, African Games, Pan-American Games and several others. But since the weather conditions of the Old Continent could hardly match the continental and world competition calendar, the idea of "European Olympics" was abandoned, and the EYOF has been launched instead! From its inception the intention of the European Youth Olympic Festival has been regarding the creation of the opportunity for the sake of the athletes of Europe to meet in their arenas fostering the spirit of friendship, fair play, tolerance and values which bring the people living in the countries of Old Continent closer together and help them become the citizens of Europe. It is perceived, that the EYOF depends a lot and quite firmly on the principles of the international Olympic games for the creation of a better and more peaceful world. It is done only by educating young people through the discipline of sports while avoiding at the same time any type discrimination and also endorsing the spirit of friendship, solidarity and fair play. We shall have to keep in concern that there are several ideals pursued by today's Europe, and which may be recognized in these principles that were originally developed by Baron, Pierre de Coubertin, the person instrumental behind the beginning of the Olympic Movement in a revived form, leading to the formation of the International Olympic Movement.

There is no doubt in it, even according to the detractors, that due to the presence of sound principles from the very inception, the European Youth Olympic Festival gained the reputation of being the competition developing the future champions, an ideal platform where the potential Olympians experiencing the challenges of sacrifice, justice and respect for rivals are recognized and developed!
