The word wushu in the literal sense means martial art. It is to be noted that it is a more precise term than the widely used term kung fu, which apart from meaning martial art, also denotes skill. It should be taken into considertion, that as a a craftsperson or artisan could be said to have good "kung fu" in the way in which they carry out their craft; in the same way, a wushu practitioner can also be said to have good "kung fu" in their wushu practice. But in another sense, besides refering to any martial art in the world, in practice it often referes to the modern sport named "wushu".

Wushu is extremely popular both as a traditional as well as contemporary sport in China. It is also finding a large number of takers in other parts of the world. The popularity of wushu has much to do with many movies that depict wushu in them. Wushu is in fact the central theme of many Chinese movies. Such movies have made big movie stars out of wushu practitioners. These movies have been also the reason for popularizing wushu in different parts of the world.
