The history of Burke is quite unique. It is named for Silas Burke who was a 19th century farmer, merchant, and local politician. In the year 1824, Silas built a house near the valley of Pohick Creek. The house remains there to this day. When the Orange and Alexandria Railroad was built in the later part of the 1800’s, the railroad station was named Burke's Station after Burke. This was because he owned the land in the area and donated some of it to the railroad company. Troops used the railroad station during the American Civil War.
In 1903, the name of the post office was changed from Burke's Station to simply Burke.The area remained very rural until after World War I, when some workers of the United States government began moving into the area and commuted to Washington, D.C. by train. By the year 1951, the United States Civil Aeronautics Administration announced their idea to use almost four thousand acres of land in Burke to build an airport to serve the Washington metropolitan area. In 1960, Kings Park was built, it was a very large planned neighborhood. Soon, many others were built. Because of this, Burke is now a highly populated suburban community.
