Eco-Feminism - The New Alternative

What is eco-feminism? It is indeed a feminist environmental philosophy that is involved in drawing parallels between the oppression of women and the oppression of nature by the patriarchal society. It also advocates the spiritual and political liberation of both. Again, unlike the conventional Western philosophy, eco-feminism is found to deny ethical essentialism, the core belief that the concepts are defined by a set of necessary and sufficient conditions. It is true, that the notion of eco-feminism can only give necessary conditions; the sufficient conditions are historically situated.
In the present world, where a lot of ideologies are practically ruling the international spectrum, viz. Liberalism, Marxism, Capitalism, the notion of eco-feminism has been the latest. In short, eco-feminism is a social and political movement that is set to unite environmentalism and feminism with some traits linking deep ecology and feminism. It has been found, that the ecofeminists do argue that a certain kind of specific relations exists between the oppression of women and the degradation of nature. In conjunction with it there also exists a relation with the exploration of the intersectionality between sexism, the domination of nature, racism, speciesism, and also the other traits of social inequality. In this regard, in the recent days there have been some monumental works from the exponents of eco-feminism emphasizing that both the capitalist and patriarchal system is based on the notion of the triple domination of the "Southern People" women and nature, or the people living in the Third World countries, the majority of which are south of the First World. Now comes the question how did it begin with? To be very precise, ecological feminism or eco-feminism, as it is better known is a term coined in 1974 by the eminent author and activist Francoise d' Eaubonne. From that very period it has been regarded as a philosophy and also movement born from the unison of both feminist and ecological thinking, and also the belief that the social mentality that leads to the domination and oppression of women is directly related or connected to the social mentality leading to the abuse of the environment. There happens to be the existence of the combination of eco-anarchism or bioregional democracy along with a strong ideal of feminism. On the other hand, its chief exponents are often found to lay emphasis on the significance of interrelationships between humans, non-human others (for instance, animals and insects), and also the earth. Gain there is a central principle in the notion of eco-feminism, that states that male ownership of land has led to the growth and also the establishment of a dominating culture, known as patriarchy. This concept of domination is manifested in food export, over-grazing, the tragedy of the commons, exploitation of people, and an abusive land ethic, in which both animals and lad are valued only as the best means of economic resources. In addition, there are other ecofeminists who are also in positions to explain how the degradation of nature contributes to the degradation of women. For instance, in the works of Thomas-Slayter and Rocheleau, we do find the detailed descriptions of how in Kenya, the dominance of the capitalist driven export economy has caused most of the agriculturally productive land to be used for monoculture cash crops. This concept has led to the increase of the use of pesticides, along with resource depletion and marginalization of the subsistence farmers, especially women, to the hillsides and less productive land, where their deforestation and cultivation led to the rapid erosiion of soil, augmenting the degradation of the surrounding environment that hurts their own productivity.

Thus in the ideal of eco-feminism these views of gender and environment constitute feminist political ideology which links feminist cultural ecology, political ecology, geographical ecology and feminist political ecology into one notion.
