What would we do without the Internet? So many people rely on the web to communicate with others. It seems so natural to get to a computer, turn it on and the first thing that most people do is to check their email. When the Internet fist started, people would wonder in amazement as their computer blipped and stated, “You’ve got mail”. It seemed quite amazing. One was astounded that information could so quickly be sent and then received. It changed communication forever.

A growing concern that is now hitting the Internet and is directly related to email safety, are copy-cat sties that are sent to people via email. These sties and the people who run them are very destructive.

There are unfortunately people who have set up web sties that look exactly like popular sties that a lot of people go to. Some of the copy-cat sates are EBay and PayPal. What will happen is that millions of emails will be sent out, claiming that a person has a pending issue on the site. The email will contain a link that brings the person to the site. Unknown to the email receiver, the site is not what they think it is. It may look exactly like the PayPal site, but it is not. All colors are copied, all text, all of it. Then, a person will enter their private password; and they have you!

The only way to get around this and keep your email safe is if you do open one of these emails; never ever click on the link that is supplied to you. Close the email, type the real trusted URL into your search bar and then go into the site. If there are truly any issues, you will see a notification. In addition, keep in mind that any real site will begin with https and not just http. The “s” stands for secure. To keep your email safe, do not forget this important aspect.
